Nicknames - hate them or love them?

Alright so how do you feel about nicknames for your LO? Whether its from their name or just a random one.  DH and I don't mind nicknames.  Right now baby is known as Peanut.  And from the names we've picked out we don't mind any of the nicknames we can think of.

  • Until we find out what we're having, our LO's nickname is greene bean (cause our last name is Greene)

  • I don't mind nicknames that have nothing to do with LO's actual name.  However, like my parents, we will not name LO anything that can be shortened.  No Williams for us :)

  • DD is a Madelyn & we call her Mady.  When I was pregnant I always called her Peanut, because my doctor thought she was going to be tiny.  Then she came out weighing 8lbs 11 oz! LOL.  We would always call her legs her "chunky monkeys", and now I just call her Monkey.

  • I love nicknames! My name is Samantha so I have the normal ones: Sam & Sammie, Also I have silly ones from friends and my siblings: Samboni, Sam I Am etc. They don't bother me and some of them make me laugh.

  • I like a good nn.  I don't like the nn's that some names lend themselves to (i.e. James=Jim/Jimmy) so I wouldn't name my child that.

  • We have such a short common last name that our LO will have a fairly long proper name.  So I'm sure we'll use a nickname while they are little...

On a related note: DH's name is James and he goes by James.  For some reason, people like to try to call him "Jim" after they meet him once.  He has never gone by that and gets slightly annoyed when people continue to call him that after he's nicely corrected them.

One of my favorite comments from him, "Why do people feel the need to shorten a 1-syllable name to a 1-syllable nickname?"

My stepdad is like that too.  He is a Michael & gets really annoyed when people assume he likes to be called Mike.  He corrects them & then they continue to call him Mike.  He's started ignoring people who do it.

  • I hated the common nickname for my name so I didn't set out having my DD automatically go by one.  DD's name could be nicknamed to Kate or Kathy but we call her Kathleen.  If we want to shorten how we're referring to her in e-mail or text its just "K".  Or random pet names.

My Mom tried like heck to get me to be a "Shelly" and I would correct her, even at 3 that my name was Michelle, not Shelly.  I figure my DDs friends will give her the nn that will "stick".  I didn't become Mish until high school ;)

  • we don't have any cute nn's for them right now...we refer to them as "the babies" lol. But I definitely think nick names are great. I know my husband will come up with some creative/wacky ones for the kids....the nick name he gave me is now STUCK and it's so strange....lol.

Exactly like my mom. Her name is Diana and people always try to call her Diane. She gets annoyed so at that. She told me that when she was first in grammar school her teachers used to call her Diane and she would go home and be called Diana so she didn't know what her real name was!

  • We have always called DD Petunia. My grandfather called my mom, sister and I that and it kind of stuck.

  • Love them. Nicknames never cross my mind (unless it's something really bad) when picking a name. I figure it'll happen eventually and if it's a nn proofed name, someone will dream something up along the line. For example I have a nephew named Mason. Pretty nicknamed proofed right? Every one calls him Jack. We don't know why.

    Everyone I know has a nickname. I have 3. It's a fact of life and I think it's fun.

  • I adore nicknames!!!  Everyone in my family pretty much has one.  We *think* we are having a boy (this week I will schedule the anatomy scan for next month)...his name will be Montgomery and his nickname will be Monte.  I think nicknames are important :)

  • Hate them. With a passion. Like, I turn into the green hulk when nicknames are discussed.

I really don't understand the  "we're going to name him xxxx, but we'll call him yyyyy" idea. If you're going to call him yyyy, why not just name him yyyy? If you don't like xxxxx, don't effin use it.

*note: does not apply to nicknames such as "sweetheart" or others of the kind. I'm talking about when role call is done in school, and the kid has to correct the teacher about what their name is.

  • I love nicknames. My mom hated them so she chose names for us that couldn't yield a nickname. :(

We currently don't really have one for DS or LO.

For us, my grandmother named my father Larry, not Lawrence, but Larry.  As an adult, he may want to use the professional sounding Lawrence...but he can't because his parents named him the nickname version.  We wanted a grown up sounding, professional type name and it happens to have a nickname we love!

I know of a Randy who wishes his full name was Randall for business purposes.  My friend named her kid Ellie and I think that grows up poorly.  It'd look better to have Eliana, Eleanor, etc. in a professional setting.  JMO.

  • Not a fan.  I picked a name that couldn't be shortened, my MIL thinks it still can.

  • I like nicknames in general, especially if a small child has a really long or elaborate name, which could be a lot for them to deal with. That said, I have specifically ruled out certain names for our baby because I could see it would be shortened to something I didn't care for. Actually, it made the boys names easier to narrow down (ie, I like Gabriel but not Gabe).

My dad's name is Randy (just Randy) and he hates when people automatically assume his given name is Randall.  Then again, my sister is named Kate (not Katherine).  We were all given names that couldn't be shortened.  So what do people do?  They elongate them by calling my sister Katie or my dad Randall.

  • I personally don't like nicknames if you name your child a long name with the sole intention of them going by something else (I will say, some circumstances or names don't bother me as much as others). But DD is Avery and my sisters and I call her Ave a lot and it's kinda stuck. We don't get Ave personalized on anything, but it's just a short thing to say.

And as for other nicknames, I didn't really care before but DD goes by so many- we call her munchkin, doodle bug, june bug, baby bear...... the list goes on and on and on. :)

  • I think nicknames are cute.  We named our daughter Amelia (which I love) and call her Millie (which I love even more).  When she's older she can decide for herself what she wants to go by.  We're looking for a name that will lend itself to a cute nickname for this LO as well.

  • depends on what they are! LOL One of the girl names we like, H doesn't like what the nickname would be but I have a different take on it so we'll see if we go w/ it or not!
  • I like unique nicknames like "peanut" or my parents called me "toosky" for some reason. Things that come on by themselves and have a story are cute. on the other hand... I HATE nicknames that come from the babies birth name. If I chose to name her something then that is her name... not shortened, not the middle name. NOO haha. its a big pet peeve of mine. lol

  • I really like nicknames! We don't have any that stem from DD's actual name, but little names like: silly Sally, wild woman, and sweet sugars. I love making them up for close family members too! My little sister was called ten diff nicknames by me.
