Postpartum Depression

Question about Zoloft

I just started taking Zoloft a few days ago and it seems to be helping a bit, but I am concerned about weight gain. I've been having trouble losing my baby weight and I don't want to gain any more. If I gain more weight it will more than likely just make me more depressed. I have noticed in the few days I have been on it that I have had a decrease in appetite which is good, but I'm still concerned.

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone gained/lost weight on this medication?

Re: Question about Zoloft

  • I don't recall gaining weight while I was on zoloft.  Here is my unsolicited advice.  If you are that concerned about gaining weight (and believe me, I know we all want to lose the baby weight) just make a determined effort to eat healthier.  I know once I got on my zoloft and was starting to get better, I actually started to care about taking care of myself.  I don't know how your PPD reared it's ugly head, but a lot of mine was neglecting myself.  There were entire days where I wouldn't eat at all.

I guess my biggest piece of advice is to get healthy first and then worry about losing the weight.  I'm so glad that the zoloft seems to be helping - it was a godsend for me!  GL

This. Please please please remember that the medicine will only work the way it is supposed to if you do some work too. I am not saying this to be snarky or mean...I had severe PPD/PPA for a long time after DS was born and I am still struggling with a few things. But what i can say is this...you must first and foremost concentrate on taking care of yourself...mentally & emotionally first, so that you have the ability to care for yourself physically. IMO, zoloft does not cause/inhibit weight gain, but if the medicine (or any SSRI) is not helping, then depression can lead to behaviors that can cause weight gain.

  • I still have so much baby weight to lose but my relationship with myself and my DD trumps weight gain by 1,000. Just like PP get better first then worry about weight. Not to mention working out and eating well also helps with depression so maybe you can just group them all together. Best of luck
  • I just started Zoloft. I am pregnant and neither want to gain too much weight or experience weight loss... I will see how it affects me in time, and get back to you.
