Flying with toddler...share your tips please!

If DD continues to get better, we will be flying to Miami this Thurs. She has been sick since last week but seems to be getting better (grams will be meeting her for the first time ever!!!).

We are flying American airlines. I am not checking in luggage, just carry on, and was wondering if could take my diaper bad which looks like a handbag along with another tote..anyone know?  THanks!

So I know someone posted about this earlier but thenest search function sucks, so can you pls share your tips for flying with a toddler.

Gracias!

  • You get one carry-on, one personal item (purse) and the diaper bag. If DD has her own seat she could have a personal item and carry-on

  • Loading the player...
  • DVD player! LOL I have no idea how far you have to go but seriously.....I'm one of the most anti-tv peeps out there but I swear by this. I love our Kidzgear headphones (fits their head).

  • Get there early and take your time.  If need be, take a stroller to put all the stuff on to get to the gate, and gate check it.  Look for a family line in security, as they are very patient and helpful, and the TSA workers in that line are experts at putting car seats thru the xray, folding strollers, etc.

You can take as many kid liquids as you need (juice, bottles, etc.) just declare it and prepare to have it checked.

I always think it is so much better to try and get seats in the very last row of the plane.  Then you have less people around you to annoy, are most likely to have empty seats near you, and have flight attendants handy to help with handing extra crackers or stuff to entertain.

  • Snacks and books are my life savers.  Reed wouldn't watch TV until very recently so when we attempted to get him to watch a DVD, he wasn't into it.  I pack lots of toys!

I have never had an issue with diaper bag + purse + camera bag.  I have also brought liquids with no problems.

  • 1st, have your liquids and baby's all set in a small bag ready to pull out onto the "kid & family" line at the security line. I always have extra. they don't seem to mind with a kid in tow.

I like our Itouch loaded up with shows and movies rather than DVD, it's smaller. but if you don't have one, best have that DVD player. Ava's used to watching it without sound, but the earphones are nice.

I don't worry about anything for me to do, maybe a magazine at most, but I just sit there with my eyes closed if I get that blessed moment.  Just have a bag at your feet filled with tricks. I fill plastic easter eggs with treats for Ava. Dollar Store finds fill paper bags or whatever grab bags. Window markers rock, with a wash cloth to clean at the end of the flight. (she loves to clean) We board 1st and get locked into her carseat, next to the window. I check my stroller at the gate, IN a bag, it'll get trashed. You'll need a "ticket" from the gate agent prior to tag it.  Your fellow passengers will help you, your flight attendants will not ;-(  (from my experience)

The Rule of Flight - kids poop 10 minutes after 30K feet. lol. Either be ready to head to the restroom, or change them, whatever's applicable. Long flight? bring a shirt, you'll be scuzzy at the end.

I know Howley rec's boarding last, and I like that idea sometimes, but with carrying a carseat, a kid, two bags and a camera bag, it's too much stuff to carry alone down the crowded skinny aisles without banging people.

Bottom line, you will NEVER see these people again, you do what you have to do to make the trip comfy for you and your kid. End of story ;-)

  • I brought a few lollipops which are a novelty to Claire.  She did fine up until about 30 minutes left and I was able to pull one out and pacify her for that last bit.  And with the DVD player, make sure the battery if fully charged before you get on the plane!  I had let Claire watch it while we were waiting for the plane and with an hour left on the plane, it went dead.  Thank goodness for those lollipops (again).  And yes, I got looks from the other passengers since it was so early in the morning.  As Davezwife said, I just smiled and knew that I was never going to see them again.
