Travel - Renting a car seat?

Has anyone ever rented a car seat from a rental car company when traveling? we're thinking about doing this for an upcoming trip to save us one less thing we have to bring to the airport. I called the rental car company (Thrifty), and they weren't able to tell me what brand car seat we would get, just that it would be a rear facing infant seat. I'm just wondering if anyone has rented a seat before from a similar company, and if so, was your experience OK?

Re: Travel - Renting a car seat?

  • I have never heard of renting one before. I wouldn't feel comfortable using a car seat that I don't know anything about. Who knows if it has been in accidents or what the previous people who rented it have done to it. I would bring my own car seat. I might be over reacting, but better safe than sorry! GL!

  • When we make our trip to canada, my mom will be getting us a carseat while we are there so we dont have to bring ours with us. it probably wont be like uber expensive, but it will serve its purpose. either that or we will borrow one from a friend/family
  • I just rented one in December when we went to Albuquerque to visit my brother, and I really wish I hadn't.  I was with you in thinking that it would be one less thing to have to travel with and worry about, but I should have just taken ours.  The rental company first brought me a front-facing seat, and I had to go back in to get a rear-facing.  The one they brought me was filthy, crusty, and probably older than most preschoolers.  The buckles didn't unbuckle easily, and it was a pain to use.  They ended up crediting the account, and I got all my money back.  In hindsight though, traveling with our seat would have been so much easier and less stressful.

  • When we flew to ND in September my mom rented one.  It was free with her AAA card.  It wasn't the newest and best seat, but it served the purpose.  Before we left the lot I checked the expiration date and buckles and it was fine.

  • In August we rented one from the car company.  It was crappy and they won't put it in for you for liability reasons.  I won't do it again.
  • I wouldn't. They can't guarantee they will have the right kind of seat available, plus you don't know the condition of the seat. I also wouldn't trust that it hasnt been in an accident. We've flown with DD1 a handful of times and once with both girls now. You can check the carseats free either with your luggage or at the gait.
