Anyone's Parents Sell Their Childhood Home?

My parents sell the house I grew up in - my WHOLE life - in July.  They had it on the market since March and we went and stayed a couple times before they sold it (it's in MD, we're in NY).  But I cried my eyes out multiple times over it, I was SO weirdly emotional about it.

I still miss it so much...b/c it represented safety and security to me and whenever things get scary (i.e. now) I always want to run there...

Re: Anyone's Parents Sell Their Childhood Home?

  • My parents have talked of moving, and as selfish as it sounds, I too get a bit upset thinking about it.  I can't imagine another family living there, but I guess that's life :(

  • My parents still live in the house we had when I was in 8th grade through whenever I moved out but when they sold the house we lived in 3rd through 8th grade, I cried and cried and cried!  I think its funny now....no clue why I loved that house so much but I really did.  So I sort of understand :)

My mom has redone my old room twice since I've been gone, so it doesn't even begin to feel like my room anymore, so if/when they sell that house, I don't think it will affect me.

    TTC since May 2009 - DOR (ovarian cancer) DE w RBA December 2011 - transferred one embryo 12/14 - three frosties Beta #1 - 129 (12/22) Beta #2 - ? (12/26)
  • My parents sold ours when I was 22.  Dad got a job an hour and a half away.  I was graduating college at the time, so I was not only moving out on my own, but I had to pack up all my childhood memories and find storage in my new apartment for everything.  It was hard but I think I missed my parents more than I missed the house.

Funny story- my (then 8 year old) cousin was on a tour of my parents new house and she asked me where my room was.  I told her that I didn't have one.  She looked like she was about to cry and said "you don't have a room?!".  She didn't understand that I lived on my own and thought I was homeless!  She is 14 now and doesn't live that story down.

  • I definitely cried when my parents sold the house we all grew up in! To some extent it did represent safety (although it was totally in the ghetto and I can't blame them for getting out as soon as they could LOL).
  • My parents actually just moved this past summer. However, due to the terrible Michigan economy, my childhood home still hasn't sold. It's really sad to see it empty though, with that stupid sign in front of it. I hate it!! I totally understand where you're coming from.

I think what's worse for me though, is my grandparents' house. My grandma passed away several years ago, and my grandpa in 2009. The house is also on the market and hasn't sold. It was the happy place of all our family gatherings, and this was the first holiday season that we weren't there. It's weird. I hate getting older.

  • I know how you feel, although my situation wasn't exactly the same...

I grew up with a single mom and my grandmom in a rough neighborhood.  They and my uncle scrimped and saved for years to move into a better neighborhood and when I was in 8th grade, they found a house on the street where my g-mom was born.  I loved that house and we all were so proud of it.  Shortly after moving in, my g-mom died, then my uncle moved in and a few years later he died very suddenly at 44.  When he died, I was a freshman in college.  I understand that it was difficult for my mom to live there alone, but I was heartbroken when she sold it.  She called me while I was in a summer abroad program in Ireland to tell me that she sold it, and it was really emotional for me.  I still think of it as being "our house."

  • I actually live in my childhood home!  My parents moved last February to their retirement home about 3 1/2 hours away.  The house was for sale, and when we decided to move back to my hometown in November, they offered it to us for a REALLY good rental rate.  I don't love the area as much as some others in town (it has changed a lot since I lived there as a kid) but it's kinda fun to live in the same house.  And it's so cheap.  My mom even told my H last time she was visiting that we could live there for free when we have our baby and I am on maternity leave.

It is really strange sleeping in the room that was my parents room though!  And when they come to visit they sleep in my old room =)

  • Unless something changes my parents will be living in their house the rest of their lives.  They have a farm and my dad love owning property so I am not too worried about them moving.  I was devastated when the completely changed my room.  I live so close now though that it is not like I will be staying there.

  • We actually bought my parents house, although they only bought it when I was 16.  They wanted to move to a condo and DH and I were looking for a house in the area, so we ended up buying theirs.  The bad thing will be if we ever decide to get a bigger house (it is only 3 bedrooms) it will be really hard for me to leave it and move.  We won't be moving anytime soon though!!

  • My parents sold our childhood house last July and I was so so upset! I knew it was what they really wanted and I love where they live now, about 30 mins away, but it's just not the same. I still can't drive by our old house because it makes me so sad. I drove by it once and it was so weird that I couldn't just stop and go in.

You're right, it just holds so many memories and a sense of safety and that makes me sad. My H and I thought about buying it but it just wasn't feasible at the time. It would have taken forever to sell our current house the way the market is now.

  • My parents sold their home a couple of years ago and did not tell me until their settlement date.  It was upsetting becasue I live hours away and didn't have a chance for one last visit.

  • My parents are divorced (and remarried), but my mom and SD sold the house they bought when I was 8 a few years ago.  It was really weird, but they wanted something all on one floor, so it made sense.  We moved several times before that house and I've moved a million times since I left home, so I guess I don't get that attached to houses.

  • I can totally relate. My parents divorced and sold my childhood home when I was a senior in college. I fellt so lost and that I didn't have a home or a place of security. All I had was my tiny college apartment! But, it does get easier with time even though I still miss is dearly.

  • They've talked about it but I doubt it will ever happen while they are alive. They have no mortgage and can't afford a new house. I would be devastated and probably buy it although I have no idea what the heck I would do with it since my hometown school district sucks. I'm super tied to the house I grew up in. I know it will happen once day but that day will suck esp if some crappy person buys and becomes a slum lord and they let the house fall apart. I would be so sad.
