what do you do with tofu?

Ok, I've never made tofu for DH and I, so I'm clueless....how do I make it for DS? Do you just mix it with the purees, or give them chunks to pick up and eat?

(Assuming you don't have to cook it, right? Sorry if this is a dumb question.)

Re: what do you do with tofu?

  • You don't have to cook it, but I did.  I cut firm tofu into small cubes and lightly steamed it.  You can also use soft tofu.  Silken tofu might be a little goopy, but I don't see why you can't use it.

I tried having DD pick it up herself and eat it, but the cubes ended up all over her and all over the floor, so I spoon-fed it to her after blitzing it in the food processor.  My DD hated it by itself.  After a few days of her fighting me, I gave up and mixed in some fruit purees.  She took it with no problems after that.

  • To be honest, I've never made anything with tofu-  Where would you find it in the grocery store?

I usually find it in the refrigerated dairy section of my supermarket, but I've also seen some grocery stores place it near the refrigerated pre-packaged cold cuts, too.

  • I've read to coat the pieces with wheat germ so they don't slide all over the place when they try to pick them up.  We'll probably start with it pureed since we're just starting finger foods.

  • Thanks!  I think I'll get some next time and try it out with Ds.  And maybe find a recipe for myself! :)  It's funny that Ds is apparently encouraging me to try new foods

Thanks! I'll try mixing it w/ pureed fruit to start.

  • I haven't given it to DD yet but my DH and I eat it all the time. It's in our refrigerated produce section. We let it drain by putting a few plates on top of it for 30 minutes or so, then cut it up into ~1x2" cubes, fry it in a little veg. oil for 6-7 mins on each side without touching it too much. We add rice and veggies with peanut sauce-delish!
