Rec your convertible seat please?

Had I known we'd be buying a convertible seat this soon, I would have just gotten one to begin with, but since we didnt, can you rec yours?

I'm looking for: something economically priced. I don't mind spending a bit more for something really quality made, but I think around $200 would be the top of our budget. I'd really like to find something that can take a higher max weight, since it is a bigger purchase as far as our financial situation is concerned, and I'd like to get as much use out of it as humanly possible with DS, since there isn't another LO in our future any time soon. Also, we don't have unlimited space in our car. The backseat isn't very wide, and there isn't a ton of room between the back seat and the front, despite the fact that we drive a station wagon aka grocery-getter.

Any recs appreciated. My financial aid disbursement from school should be happening soon, and tax refunds are right around the corner, and I need to get something soon because DS is growing out of the bucket seat pretty quickly. TIA!

  • We had to buy an extra for MIL's car. We bought one of the higher weight limit Radians for our car but didn't want buy 2. We went with the Graco My Ride 65. It is not small but it is a good value. We traded in our extra bucket during one of the BRU promotions and saved even more. I was really happy with the price for rfing weight limits.

  • Mom & MIL both have the Evenflo....oh crap. Hang on. BRB ETA: Ok... Here you go. It's called the Symphony. It had great safety reviews on consumer reports and it was under $200. https://www.evenflo.com/product.aspx?id=299&pfid=3097. They bought it at BRU with one of those 20% off coupons you get at the register. HTH

  • We looked at both the graco and evenflo listed above, but went with a Britax Marathon 70.  It really seemed like it would fit DS the longest (40 rear facing, 70 forward facing, 49" tall), and we got a great deal on Amazon.  We just installed it this weekend, and he fell asleep within five minutes of his first ride in it.  FWIW however, we have an SUV, so we have room to play with, but it still doesn't seem like a huge seat at all.

Oh. I also got a BRU flyer this weekend, and they are having a trade in sale, if you might want to trade your infant seat towards your new one.  I think its a 25% discount.

  • The first years true fit will definitely meet your needs. It's the tallest convertible on the market, so it will last almost every child until booster age. I think some are on amazon for $125 right now. Otherwise, the my ride and evenflo are good seats, but you'll most likely have to buy another harness seat before they're ready for a booster. The sunshine kids radian is my favorite convertible and sometimes go on sale for under $200.
  • We have the Britax Marathon, but we spent a bunch of gift money on it. We found it on sale and with free shipping. I don't know what is new out there. There is no way we could afford one with higher weight/height with DH in law school. If it helps, DS is on the taller side and he is still a long way off from needing to FF. And his weight hasn't changed within a pound since 18 months. At this point, he still has four pounds and the height says 49 inches on the website. He was 29 lbs at 18 months and is only 30 now so I have no idea how long he'll stay RF. It seemed like he would need to switch at two, but he could probably go until three at this rate.

Pretty much all of this exactly (even the baby's names!) although DS is a little smaller!

  • Just so you know, DS outgrew the marathon by 43 inches. I can't imagine it would last any kid much longer than that and definitely not 49 inches.

I'm glad they increased the rfing limits on the Britax. They were still at 35 when we were shopping and we bought the Radian online. I would have rather bought something we could have tried in the store.Turns out DD is only 24lbs at 2 so we have a ways to go height wise. She is long at 34.5 inches but it should acommodate her for several more years.

  • we have a recaro [they're all very sturdy but big so make sure your car is big enough first] and a combi coccoro. the combi is harder to get really tight in my car but it's the lightest weight convertible seat and very compact so if you travel, that would also be a good one to try.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying. How is it possible that your kid outgrew this seat? The height is less than 49 inches and the weight is up to 65 lbs. Did you realize that the seated height is from their shoulders to bum and not their head? I guess I'm confused.
