Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Have you given your LO juice yet?

Im curious how many of you have given your LO juice?  If so, how old were they when you first gave it to them and how much did you start out giving?  I know you are supposed to dilute it (one part water, one part juice).  Do you just give it in addition to a feeding...like at a time when they arent hungry?

  • Here is a link that may be helpful to read about giving LO juice. HTH :)

  • I don't intend to ever give R juice... It has no nutritional significance to a baby; the risk outweighs the "benefits" for me.
  • Haven't given any juice.  To each their own, I don't see the point in giving babies juice.  Water and milk are the only things we drink in this house, so why should LO's diet be different?

  • We tried it for the first time yesterday and I did even less than half apple juice and LO hated it....spit it out a few times till I changed her sippy cup to just water. then she was happy. But yes you are def suppose to dilute it they say 1/2 and 1/2 but were planning on still keeping it more water for awhile.....if she ever takes it
  • We tried juice 1 time when she hadn't pooped in 6 days, but other than that no.

The pedi said it was't necessary now, and I plan on waiting til AT LEAST 6 months.. probably closer to 7 or even 8. Personal preference.

  • We haven't started juice - still working on doing cereal on a regular basis. I think we'll wait until 5 months for juices. But our pediatrician said no more than 4 oz/day. (Not sure if that's 4oz before or after diluting.) As far as timing goes, I'm planning on trying it around 30 min before he usually nurses. So he's not famished but still interested.

  • I rarely even give my almost-3-year-old juice, and when I do it's like 1 part water to 10 parts juice.  I think he was about 18 months old before I gave that to him.

ETA: my ratio above is backwards - I give him 1 part juice in 10 parts water (basically just a splash of juice).  Duh!

  • I don't think there's any point to giving LO juice - it's not at all beneficial, except like a PP said, maybe prune juice if LO is backed up... but even then if your LO is on solids there's probably a food you can give that'll help AND provide some actual nutrition. Juice is just sugar and kids don't need to be more interested in sugar than they naturally are.

Same here.  Pretty sure my almost 5-year-old has only had juice a handful of times, and that's when he's at a b-day party or something.  My 3-year-old will gladly choose water over any other drink any time.

The only options in our house are water or milk (though there's no choice at meals, it's always milk, at least for now).

  • I gave juice to DD the first time yesterday at 6 months.  I'm hoping it will help her poops come out easier.  I am breastfeeding and introducing solids and she's had a lot of hard stools and constipation the past 2 weeks.  I read that juice, diluted of course, can help...if you can get her to drink it....which so far, she has not.

  • Nope. I am not planning to until he needs it. Otherwise, IMO, it is just unnecessary sugar.

same. someday i will use my juice extractor to make her fresh juice but aside from that, it's breast milk or water for at least the first 2 years. i would never give processed juice regardless.

  • I just found out my mom would dilute our juice till we were old enough to pour it ourselves. I plan to do that with my DS too. I have not talked to his pediatrician about juice yet, but I am sure I will wait till he is a year old.

  • Pedi suggested we give little man juice to help with being backed up. Worked amazing. He gets it every three days to help him. 3 oz juice 1 oz water.

I know every has an opinion about this but I saw above it said not giving juice was there choice because the risk outway the reward. What is the risk in some pure juice from an apple?

  • I had some 100% apple juice with breakfast yesterday. There was a few drops left in my cup so I tried it with DD mainly becasue I wanted to try an regular cup with her. She did great with the cup and loved the apple juice. That being said I don't plan on giving DD juice all the time. Once in a great while for a treat would be ok with me.

Same here. Juice has no nutritional value - better to just wait until they're big enough, and feed them actual fruit instead.
