VENT: No appt for another 2 wks..and more :(

So, this DR office doesn't see you until 8 weeks (so they can take an U/S)That means 2 more weeks until I find out the due date and see if something is really in there! (at my last dr. they checked for hb right away)

Also, only a nurse sees you until the end of your pregnancy. :/ NOT what I am used to! The hospital is brand new and very nice, but my practice in NY was so cool. All women doctors who see you every time, and you can call them anytime.

This is the only hospital in the area AND the only place that takes my insurance. Plus, there is only 1 woman dr and 3 men. I have never seen a male gyn in my life. I guess I am open to a man, but I just prefer women for woman issues.

OK, rant over. ;)

    Yeah...

And really, the male Ob/Gyns I've had are very nice and very gentle.  I think they overcompensate because they can't truly understand how you're feeling.

  • Really, it's normal? I guess that makes sense. No point in  going at 6 weeks really. I think maybe at my last practice in nyc most moms are a lot older (most over 35) so they take more precautions. Feeling better now. :)

Yup, 8 (some people here have said their first appointment is at 10) weeks is normal for a first appointment.  If you were an IF patient or had repeated losses they would probably want to see you sooner.  That your last group had a lot of AMA patients would make sense, IMO.

And yeah, you might be surprised with the male Ob/Gyn.  I was scared at first, too.  I don't see that group anymore because the only hospital where they deliver has a de facto VBAC ban in place, but the two make doctors in the group were very, very nice, and gave a much gentler pelvic exam than the female doctors I saw before I switched to that group.

  • Some don't even see you till 10 weeks or so. Completely normal. I have to wait 4 weeks to see my ob.

  • 8-10 weeks is the standard of care. As for seeing Nurse Practitioners/ Certified Nurse Midwifes - I prefer it. They typically have a better bedside manner, and are in their field specifically to deal with pregnancy. OB/GYNs have a lot of other stuff to deal with.

I get the possible discomfort with a male doctor - the only one I saw was at delivery as my CNM was not available. Just try to look at it like this - It's their job. They aren't having any more fun than you are.

  • yeah, the only reason i went to my dr so early was because my possible edd was in a 4 week range based on dates.  I knew I was 6ish weeks, but if you looked at dates alone, I would have been 10.

I'm also going to a male dr for the 1st time.  He always has a female nurse in the room for exams and is super quick.  He chatted with me the entire time about random stuff so that I didn't even think about what he was doing.  I feel completely comfortable now.

  • That all makes me feel much better, thanks. Now I have avoided calling DH and complaining and making him upset for no reason!
  • I didn't have my first appointment until 8 weeks and I didn't even get an ultrasound, so I'm a little jealous you'll have yours earlier hehe. But as for the male gynecologist thing, I've had a male gynecologist since I was 16 and at first it was a little awkward, but now that I have a female OB, I think I preferred the male doctor. The way I see it is that he does it every day of his life for like 40 years, so he better be good at it. He saw every bit of me and even had to do a surgery on me during my period (in which all of the nurses/anesthesiologist tech/doctors were male.. go figure)

At least on the bright side, you'll get to hear a heartbeat and you have insurance at some location. Hopefully you are able to be as comfortable as possible and everything goes well!

  • As PP said, 8-10 weeks is pretty normal for a first appt if there are no issues. And as for having a male OB/GYN, I was uncomfortable with it, too, until I was pregnant. A male OB ended up being my favorite in the practice I was at with DD, and I was sad to move away from him, I would have liked him to deliver my future babies, as well. His bedside manner was must more at ease than anyone female I've seen, and he always had a nurse in the room for exams, even when my DH was at appt with me.

  • At least you get in at 8 weeks...my Dr. doesn't see patients until they hit 12 weeks. Hope that makes you feel a little bit better. : )
