Success after IF

IVF questions

This cycle is about to be our 2nd failed IUI (Femara, Bravelle injectables) in TTC#2.  We also found out about MFI/morphology issues (0% normal under strict guidelines); however, our RE isn't concerned at this point since we have DS and another pregnancy (m/c)---both were medicated cycles.  We do plan on having DH provide another SA to see if anything has changed from fall.

Over the past 18 months, we've tried a bunch of medicated cycles, some through our OB, and the rest through RE.  I never thought it would take this long for #2.  I'm to the point where I'm wondering if we should be a little more aggressive with our treatment.

Our insurance doesn't cover anything fertility, so we're wondering if we're wasting time and money on IUI, or if we should just pursue IVF.

*At what point did you decide IVF was the path to take?

*If you don't mind sharing, how much did an IVF cycle cost?

*How many IUIs did you try before pursuing IVF?

Thank you.

    1. We had some pretty bad MF factors and I have PCOS with egg quality issues, I was told that my chances or IUI working weren't great, so we went straight to IVF.

    2. I have insurance coverage so I only paid about 200 in copays for office visits and monitoring. Meds I paid about 100 for copays. If I had OOP for IVF at my clinic (Rma in nj which is pretty large practice and expensive) would have been about 12,500 and that was cycle with ICIS. I would think with your MF problems they would do ICIS as well.

    3. We did not IUI at all, only clomid with TI.

Honestly, if it were me and I would move at this point.

  • *At what point did you decide IVF was the path to take? We decided after reciving my DH's s/a results - low count & motility & b/c my RE told us that IUI would likely not work & that our best chance was IVF. He gave us a 5% chance of conceiving on our own.

*If you don't mind sharing, how much did an IVF cycle cost? It's $11,500 (w/ICSI) in my area (DC area) for 1 cycle, but we did the shared risk program for $22K, which allowed up to 6 cycles. Ends up we only needed 1 so we could have saved $11K! Urg

*How many IUIs did you try before pursuing IVF? We did not do any IUIs

    GL with your decision!

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this.

We were 100% OOP and after four IUI cycles, we wanted to put our money toward what would give us the greatest chance at success. Our RE recommended we move to IVF, but we were definitely ready.

Our IVF cost was a lot more than a normal IVF because we did a shared risk program. We paid more upfront, but were guaranteed 3 fresh/3 frozen and a partial refund if none worked.

    Good luck with your decision.

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • *At what point did you decide IVF was the path to take? We decided after getting my husband's s/a results, severe male factor infertlity.  We were told that our chances of an IUI would most likely not work for us.  Our RE gave us a less than 5% chance of conceiving on our own.  We ended up getting pregnant on our own when DD was 8 months old. *If you don't mind sharing, how much did an IVF cycle cost? Our IVF/ICSI was about $17K for only one cycle.  We paid out of pocket and had no insurance benefits for anything. *How many IUIs did you try before pursuing IVF? None.
  • We basically just followed our RE advice. She gave us an 8% chance of IUI working for us but still recommened it just because it is way cheaper but utimately she recommened IVF for us.

We did the  3 IUIs and they didn't work so we just knew that IVF was for us. No insurance coverage for fertility treatment so we had been saving a while in case we had to do IVF so we were financially ready. I was desparate to have a child since I had been trying for so long.

Our IVF cycle was about 18,000 after it was all said and done.

  • Hi!

*At what point did you decide IVF was the path to take? We had male factor issues, low motility and morph.  Dr. M  said we could try more iuis but it didn't look too promising.  We had already been trying and saving on our own for about 4 years before we did medicated cycles for about 6-8 months.  We decided to just go for it!

*If you don't mind sharing, how much did an IVF cycle cost? Can't fully remember, but you probably know the answer.  We were fortunate enough to have some coverage and to have awesome prescription drug coverage.  We had the infertility coverage for about 6 months b/c of an insurance switch at DH's work.  We are so so fortunate that we were able to take advantage of it.  So incredibly happy about that.

*How many IUIs did you try before pursuing IVF? just one full cycle.  one other one got cancelled.

If you have other questions, you know where to find me.

    - We went right to IVF.  When DH had his analysis they told us there was less than 1% chance of conceiving on our own and IUI's would be a waste of cash.

    -  We had insurance coverage but ended up paying $2500 out of pocket, we paid over $1000 to freeze our left over embies

Personally I would go straight to IVF, more bang for your buck.  However all out of pocket is really expensive.  Some REs will put you in contact with another patient with left over meds to cut the cost.  GL with your decision.
