Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Juice?

Anyone giving their LO juice?  If so, what amout - are you mixing with water (even if it is infant juice)?  Any pros/cons to giving it or not? I got some of the Gerber ones but haven't given DD any yet.

Re: Juice?

  • Nope.

There are no pros to offering a baby juice.
Well..maybe to relieve some constipation on the rare occasion. That's the only time I'll offer my children a small amount of juice.

  • Nope.  Juice is empty calories.

I put water in his sippy cup to practice using that, so I don't see a point for juice.

If he is constipated I give him prunes or pears and that works just fine.

  • My daughter has some constipation troubles sometimes. So once a day I give her about 1 oz of juice in a sippy cup. I have it total 2 oz because i add 1 oz of water. I've given her a few different kinds from gerber. I find that it has helped keep her more regular and she hasn't had a tough time poo-ing since I started giving it to her about 1 month ago. I find she pees a bit more and so I do go through a few more diapers every day. Prunes pears or nothing actually helps her, the only thing I've figured out is the juice...

Also, I freeze it into ice cubes and she'll suck on one ice cube in her mesh feeder each day. She LOVES that. I do that for her teeth so she gets a variety - some days juice - some days water.

  • We give DD pear juice... and sometimes apple . we mix it with water and its pretty diluted. She gets little bit of juice like once or twice a week because of poop issues. Pedi said at her 6mth appt to give her some because shes been having a really hard time going since being on solids.... but like PP said, and even the pedi said it is just empty calories so it shouldnt be a part of LOs diet or anything.... the sugar content just keeps things "movin" i guess. if she didnt have troubles i probably wouldnt think to give it to her...most of the time she has water in her sippy (which is alot less messy since she is still trying to figure the sippy out LOL, juice just gets all over and its sticky.)

  • Nope, I don't see any reason to give DS juice at this age.

  • We give LO about 3 oz of water in a sippy cup with a splash of organic apple juice. For the amount that he actually consumes and considering the amount of juice actually in there, I am not too concerned. Plus it really is in the name of practicing drinking out of the sippy, its been difficult to get him started on it.

lol. Thats probably because he's only 7 months old. It takes time! 7 months is pretty early to be expecting him to have any interest in a sippy.

But OP: no, we don't do juice. No point right now.

  • We do 1 part juice to 4 parts water in a sippy cup for practice.  He's doing well with the straw sippies but hasn't grasped the regular ones just yet. DH and I both love juice and DS always wants to sip out of our cups, so we just give him his own.
