Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Odd daycare situation...

Tegan's in a room with babies ages 7-13 months, she is one of the oldest babies. On Wednesday, DH had to pick her up early from daycare and when he got there (it was around 1 PM) he said that they had pillows on the floor, the lights dimmed and lullaby music playing. He said the teachers were trying to get the babies to lay on the pillows on the floor, he said it appeared to be "naptime", but none of the babies were in their crib. This seems a bit odd to me and I plan on asking about it tomorrow morning when I drop her off. What do y'all think?

Some of your responses are funny, but most of them, like this one, are just plain stupid. Really.

Yeah, I know. I missed the mark on this one.  This was a tough one though.
  • Sounds very Montessori.  I am a big follower of Montessori, but I just don't see how this would work in a daycare situation.
  • Starting at 12months at my DS's daycare, they begin napping on mats on the floor.  It seems to work fine for all the kids in his class.  Although, it seems young for a 7 month old to be doing this, it doesn't seem out of line to me that they expect your daughter to do this.

  • I know at the military daycare I worked at, their policy was once a child could pull to stand in the crib, they had to be moved to floor on a mat, so this doesn't really surprise me.

  • I would go ahead and ask about it but I suspect they are trying to prep them for the next classroom where they will nap on mats.  They should probably wait since since Tegan is the oldest as it is.

LO just moved to the toddler room at a Montessori daycare and that's where they all start sleeping on cots.  I didn't see how it would work either but apparently DS napped like a champ.  Peer pressure does wonders apparently.

DS is at a regular daycare and they start doing this shortly before 12 months as well.  DS transitioned early, so he's been sleeping on a cot at naptime since 10 months.  Lights out, 12:30-2:30, it's naptime for everyone.  (The ones that wake up & make too much noise, they take them to play somewhere else).

It does seem like trying this with a 7month old is a little weird, but the older kids it makes sense to me.
