School-Aged Children

Do you still take your school aged kiddo for yearly check-ups?

DS will be 6 soon.  I will probably take him in for a check up, but I honestly wonder what they will check.

I also know there will no longer be any shots (he'll be so glad to hear that!).

I was just wondering at what age do you stop the yearly check ups?  Do you ever?  Even if you're healthy?

He has glasses, so we do see an eye dr reguarly and also an allergist once a year.

  • Our school district requires children to be seen by a doctor once a year, regardless of whether shots are required!  You should check and see if yours does, too - I suspect they do.  Usually at the beginning of the year there is a form you have to sign acknowledging that your child has been examined by a physician within the last 12 months, and it also asks for the physician's name, address, telephone, etc.

  • I took them every year up to age 6.  Then the pediatrician said that if they are healthy they can come every other year.

I think our pediatrician said they get one shot when they are 11 -12 years old.  So your son may have one more in his future.  I think it's the meningococcal conjugate vaccine.

  • Yes, I treat his health like I would mine. Know what I mean? I want to make sure if anything is going on it's potentially caught.

Also, I believe they get more shots around 12 or 13??

  • I do. They just call it a well-child visit. After 6, they get a break from so many vaccines. However, an annual flu shot is an option. They also check all of the basics. If you have insurance, it's a good idea to have a check-up once a year.

    Absofuckinglutely.

If only so my DS has access to another trustworthy adult with whom he can share problems.

They'll check for appropriate growth, mental health issues, developmental and physical growth glitches, LD problems. and healthy living.

  • I don't see a reason not to go in for annual check ups. I pay a lot toward my insurance benefits, well child, annual check ups are covered 100% and I like to know that everything is on track and normal.
  • Everyone should go for a well visit regardless of age - even adults - one a year for life.  Most schools require it and I know for sports and other extra school activities they often require it.

  • Why would you ever stop the yearly check up?  It's a great time to ask questions and the overall purpose is to establish a medical history and check the basics so if something is ever "off" they'll know.  I think it's just good common sense.  DH and I do a yearly physical as well.  I hope you do, too.
