Babies: 6 - 9 Months

i seriousy hate comparing LO to others...

but I find it so hard! My friend has a LO who is 3 days apart from my LO. Her baby is already crawling and starting cruising within the past month or so. My LO could care less about crawling and I think is too distracted by her teething issues!

Some I talk to say girls develop slower than boys at these type of developmental milestones, I dont really know about that. All I know is I need to let LO be, but it is hard!

Anyone else go through this?

Re: i seriousy hate comparing LO to others...

  • I go through it big time. One friend gave birth 2 weeks before me, one 2 days after, one 2 weeks after. Its so hard to not compare babies, especially because the girl who had her baby 2 days after me is very competative. Everything about her baby is superior.

Anyways, I have been struggling with this a lot too and I just keep telling myself that every baby is different. Every baby develops at a different pace and at different times. Also, that how they develop and how quickly now,  doesn't have any effect on how smart they are in the future.

Its tough, 9 people gave birth the same year that i did that I personally know, and 1 of them is my sister in law. My nephew is 2 months older than my daughter and even in the family its a major competition - um hello, he's 2 months older! that's a lot when they're so little!  anyways, we're here with ya. I hate this, I hate comparing and I try very hard not to.

P.s. my daughter has no interest in crawling either. She has also been teething for quite some time and recently started taking steps when she's standing and holding onto us. She really doesn't want to crawl.  And my other neice is 15 months old, doesn't crawl, doesnt stand, won't use her legs barely at all... so just know that your baby has more time to get there (and they will) it just takes time.

  • Eh, my kid does next to nothing.  Crawling technically isn't a milestone since some kids don't even do it and walking it generally older, so I'm content with her being non-mobile for now.  She did other things like clapping and waving at a fairly early age so I guess she's focusing on fine motor skills?

  • I definitely understand and I think we are all guilty of it.

However, boys develop motor skills faster (walking, crawling, etc).  Girls develop social/verbal skills faster (smilling, cooing, talking, etc).  They both get there eventually, but it is truly in our nature to have gender differences.  As they say- by age 4 you can't tell who did what first...

  • I do it every single day.  I tend to forget that they are two different people who do things at two different rates.

  • Guilty as charged.

DS has a week older cousin, I see the other babies at daycare and I am a pediatric Occupational Therapist too....it stinks!

Plus DS is in PT for a gross motor delay so I look at other babies all the more.....at least he's ahead of the game in fine motor, visual motor and social-emotional skills. I think its hard not to compare at least once in a while-for anyone!

  • Just try not to do it.  DS is slow in in gross motor control and could be slow or fast in everything else - I don't look it up so I don't obsess about it.  I can understand how hard it is when surrounded by babies close in age - just stay focused on how great your LO is doing!

I think when parents that try to push their babies/kids to do things before they are ready, everyone ends up disappointed and frustrated.

  • I have a coworker who's child is a week older than LO.  She told me last week that her LO is waving and clapping.  My LO is not doing either so all weekend long I drilled it to LO to clap and wave and she could care less.  I finally realized last night as I was laying in bed how much I had focused on teaching her to wave and clap and it really upset me that I spent the entire weekend doing that when I know she will get it in her own time.  I hate comparing babies.
  • I have a really hard time not comparing my boys. Gav was army crawling everywhere at 5 1/2 months, sitting at 5 1/2 months, pulling up to things between 6 1/2 and 7 months, walking at 8 1/2 months. Brock rolls and can sit tripod. That's it ;) I *think* he'll be crawling soon because he really pushes up and tries to get on his knees, but I don't think it will be overly soon. Every baby just develops at their own pace.

  • I do it every day with my girls.  It's hard.  Also my friend had her DD 4 weeks before mine, so I always think when she's accomplished something that my girls will do it 4 weeks later...haha.  My girls did learn to give "kisses" though before her DD did.... Big Smile
