Thanks!

Re: Give me your single best potty training tip

  • On day 1 I kept asking DD if she had to go pee, and she always said No and peed herself a million times. On day 2 I changed it up. Instead of asking her if she had to pee, I'd tell her to let me know when she had to go. I would just reminder her every 10 minutes to let me know when she had to go. It worked! She had one accident on day 2, and we've never looked back! GL!

  • 1. Do not use pull-ups to start the day off. After the 3rd accident of the day, put the pull-up back on and try again the next day.

    2. Never get angry, upset, frustrated by a potty accident in front of DC. Never discipline potty accidents. Do make the child help you clean up the mess.

    3. Celebrate way over the top when DC does go on the potty. We had streamers and confetti that we threw in the air, had a huge dance, and included her favorite Teddy bear saying how proud we were of her. It was way over the top but she couldn't wait to do it again. After a few days of regularly going we toned down the celebrations. We instituted a "potty treat" which was something special to motivate her to go everytime. Ours happened to be skittles and she got 1 for #1 and 2 for #2.

    4. Do not push it. One day it will just click when the child is good and ready. Pushing really does lead to some hard times for everyone. Don't make this a battleground issue everyday. Take breaks if you need to and let there be days were "pottying" gets to be a nonissue.

  • We went naked for a weekend- of course it was summer.  But it was a lot less mess to clean.

The first day was accidents galore so don't get discouraged.  There is something to having to experience the feeling of it before they know to anticipate it.

Put your child on the potty every hour or two depending on how much the eat/drink.

Make sure you have wood floors :)

  • don't bother doing it until your child is ready.

  • I agree straight to underwear, pullups at night and nap are okay. Accidents will happen expect it and be prepared for it. It will not mean your child will not potty train it is a learning process, so accidents happen.
  • Remember that day training and night training are too totally different animals.

No one asks your child at their college interview when they were pottytrained, so if it doesn't work at 2 or 2.5 or even 3, give yourself and your child some time and try again.

All of this. We did a sticker chart where she got to pick a sticker every time she went and put it on the chart. We did this for about 10 days. We talk to our parents every few days on Skype video and when she was learning we would make a big deal about showing them the sticker chart and they would get really excited as well.

ETA: Just reread and wanted to clarify that we didn't do pull-ups after x # of accidents. We just kept putting on new underwear. It only took 2 days of multiple accidents before she was down to maybe one accident per day. I agree that it might be confusing to the child to switch back and forth.

  • No pull-ups at all.  (Diapers at night are fine, mine night trained about 6-9 months after day training.)

    Keep it positive.

    Use rewards.  (m&m's are perfect)

Plan to stay home for several days in a row and spend a LOT of time in the bathroom.

*I can't help but disagree with the advice of putting a pull-up on if they have several accidents.  That will send mixed messages...one minute they aren't allowed to go in their pants and the next they are.  The first day or two they will have MANY accidents.  It take a bit of time for them to understand so don't give up too easily and don't get frustrated.

  • Do not even try to start before the child is 24 months. They physically are not able to control themselves before then, and some kids are not ready until months after that.

I had a friend who potty-trained her boys using cheerios in the toilet. She said it helps them aim.

Using Pull-Ups/Easy Ups is why I think it took DS until 3.5 and he still will have an occasional accident. Pull-Ups are no different than diapers, I don't care if there are 'learning designs' or 'cool sensations'. My "first day or two" lasted two years and it was a battle. I tried everything.

DD started day training in cloth trainer underwear at 20mts. and is doing so far better than DS had at this age.

  • Wait until they are fully ready. If you do that, it will be EASY.

I completely disagree! Although most children are not ready to potty train until after they are 2, some children do have the ability to control themselves before then. DD was completely trained day and night at 20 months. She did it on her own as I was not even thinking about potty training but she started asking to go potty so we went with it. She wanted to do what her big bro was doing. Again it depends on the child...DS was a struggle to potty train and is still sleeping in pull ups at night at 3.5yr. Completely different experience than DD.

Also I disagree with putting a pull up on after they have 3 accidents. It sends mixed signals and will make it a more difficult process.

  • I realize the "3 accidents a day then back to pull-ups" thing is unconventional. My DD happened to be super sensitive about having accidents. For her, losing self-confidence affected her ability to move forward in the process. I only had to put her back in pull-ups for about a week before she didn't want to be in them anymore.
