Another car seat question...ladies with toddlers

I know the rule of thumb is 1 year and 20lbs before turning the child to face forward but what did you ladies do(after the 1 year and 20 lbs, of course)? Are they still facing back or did you turn them around? Preston is already over 20lbs already and his birthday is coming soon.

I should say that I have no clue what I will do at this point...

  • I've seen a lot of recommendations and talked to our pedi about waiting a lot longer than 1. We were hoping to wait until 2 but Kennedy has gotten so tall that she's outgrown the rear-facing height requirement for rear facing in our britax carseats. .

    So, we switched her to front facing this week. She is 21 months but only about 24 pounds.

  • Our seat can go to 35lbs rear facing and I can't remember the length (note to self to check that)  so we are going to leave her rear facing as long as possible.  I can't say when we will turn her, my goal is two at least but who knows...she's only 22 lbs but she's pretty tall for her age.  I have a feeling she'll outgrow it in length well before weight...but I hope to make it till 2.
  • We kept Jake rear facing until he got too tall. His couldn't straighten them anymore and he was very uncomfortable. He had no way exceeded the weight limit though.

  • Please take a look at these links. It is SO much safer to RF. The baby's neck is not strong enough to withstand a crash while FF.

    My LO is obviously still RF :) Also, it is ok for their legs to cross. I believe that is covered in at least one of the links. Babies/toddlers are so flexible and the likelihood of a broken leg from a crash is minimal compared to the danger of a crash while FF.

    Thanks for the info! I've read that it's always safer to keep them rear-facing but I was wondering what the norm was...I know that I will probably keep Preston rear-facing but I will also say that I have a hard time securing him and think things will be easier on my back once he's front-facing.

  • It absolutely is best to keep them RF as long as you can. And my Pedi advised the AAP is reviewing to extend their recommendation to 24 mos {not to change the law, but to change their rec}

    But honestly, we tried to make it until 24 mos but I gave in at 21 mos and changed Mason FF because he was giving me major fits every single time I put him in the car and would push his feet into the back of the seat to propel his body up over the top of the seat backwards {picture the boy making himself into a rocket}. It was absolutely him doing it out of defiance {arrrrgggghhh}.

    We go in to the Pedi in a couple of weeks for his 2-yr and I'm a little sad to share we switched him earlier than planned =(
