Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Would you take a 2 year old on a cruise??

Re: Would you take a 2 year old on a cruise??

  • is it a family friendly cruise? If so yes, if its more of a couple cruise then no.

  • Probably not unless it was a cruise specifically designed for families with young children/toddlers. Most cruise lines do not allow non-potty trained children to go in the pools at all, there will be several hours a day of not really being able to do much during nap times, etc. Cruises are awesome, but not really with toddlers :)
  • I wish we had took our kids on a family cruise in October instead of going on our own. I missed them so much and they had sitters on board that could come to your room after the kids were in bed if you wanted to go do something.

  • DH and I were talking about this last night, and it would have to be one that allowed babies in diapers into the pool as well.  Otherwise, there wouldn't be much for DD to do on the "sea" days.  Plus, knowing how small the inside rooms are, we'd definitley want to spend $$$ to get a larger room so we could all fit comfortably.  So, I think we'll stick to AIs or condos until DD and DD#2 are older.  :-)

  • We are going on the disney cruise with our son at the end of may/into june and then going to disney world for a few days. ?He will be 23 months. ?I think he is going to have a lot of fun. ?So yes I would! ?

  • I never even thought about the potty trained, pool thing! I was looking at Carnival cruise lines, I think they are supposed to be more geared to families right?

  • Absolutely. We took B with us on a cruise when he was 6 months old. It was awesome! We went with HAL which doesn't cater to kids really and it wasn't a problem at all.

Keep in mind that the majority of cruiselines do not let you take your kid into the pool unless they are toilet trained. Most people on cruisecritic (and the nest travel board) suggest bringing a small inflatable pool.

I think it depends on the itinerary and time of year because it is also considered a party cruiseline (again based on time of year and itinerary). Check out cruisecritic.com for info on the intinerary you are looking into. I have heard that Royal Caribbean has a good kids program as well as Disney.

  • I will be the negative one. No way!!! First of all, if I went on a cruise it would be to relax and wouldnt bring my child
  • We took DS at 11.5 months on carnival during spring break, it wasn't too much of a party atmosphere for us.  I would do it again, but at 2 I would look for either a port intensive cruise to get off go to the beach/swim or make sure you go with one that has a baby splash area for non-potty trained kids.  It's hard, I would be torn between carnival that will take 2 year olds in the kids club or RCCL and DCL that have the kids friendly splash areas.  But I would do it.

Cruisecritic.com family board has a lot of good info, as well as a functioning search function.

  • I wouldn't b/c I'd feel too confined. I like knowing that we could pack up and leave at any time, kwim? But that's just a hangup of mine. DH and I are going on an Alaskan cruise though without the kids next year though:)
  • I personally would not...to a vacation away somewhere ..sure..but not a cruise on a boat where I am confined.

  • Yep!  We care taking our then 15 month old on a cruise with us in March.  Grandpa and Grandma are going as well though so should work out pretty well.  Agree with looking at cruisecritic.com for help with planning!
  • Yes! We're going on a cruise with my in-laws in August, DD will be 20.5 months. Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Disney of course have great kids programs.
