Would it be really wrong to give DS a dog toy?

I'm being half serious here - I bought this for my dog:

She showed absolutely no interest.  It is made with certified organic cotton, non-toxic, chemical free.  Would it be a terrible idea to give it to DS?  Does that make me a terrible mother?  I'm thinking about maybe cutting off the bottom half of the rope so there aren't loose strings.  There aren't any little pieces he could choke on.  It is pretty cute!  But I feel weird doing this.  Is this weird?

  • Um...it may be because it has a rope attached to it.

My dogs try to take LOs toys...not the other way around, but if she did II think I'd feel weird about it too and probably wouldn't let her.

  • I probably wouldn't.  Something about it looking like a noose, that just doesn't sit well with me.   But that is just me.

I would just leave it out for the dog, you never know, the dog may actually take to it after awhile.   My dog ignores most of his toys when they are new and only plays with them when they have been around for a few months.

  • I would cut the rope off completely ... and then yes, give it to LO!  The rope can fray and little pieces can come off.  They make some pretty frickin' cute dog toys!  Many of them for teething pups!
  • DD eats the dog toys all the time.  She chews like crazy on the dog's rubber Kong toys.  I try not to let her but she finds them everywhere and the dog will even bring them to her in her play yard and drop them in.  The dog tries to do toy exchanges and will bring a few of his toys to her and take off with this minnie mouse rattle she has that he loves.  As much as I try they always end up with each others toys.  I just watch that she's safe and let them interact.  It's kind of cute-they are best friends.  Who knows if you let LO have the dog toy the dog may want it then.
  • I wouldn't have a problem giving DS a dog toy - he currently plays with a tennis ball (from a pack purchased for the dogs).  But I would feel weird giving him a toy that was a doggie reject.   Especially if it doesn't look like a baby toy.

And then it might be confusing if your dog took an interest in the toy (when it was covered in yummy baby saliva) since it was their toy first.

  • I gave DD a dog toy from the dollar bin @ target. It was super soft like a lovey and was a reindeer. All 4 Paws squeeked. At first it didn't occur to me that it was a dog toy. There was no filler, just soft flat material and squeekers. She LOVES it. I made sure to run it through the wash a few times before I gave it to her though, just in case.

That being said, IMHO that toy looks a little too much like a dog toy. I probably wouldn't give THAT particular one, and besides other people in public might look at you like your mentally ill for giving LO a dog toy if you were to ever take it out with LO.
