Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When do you/do you enforce clean up time?

For Z we only really do it for bedtime. We don't do it before naps and normally we do the pick-up for him. Right now he has 5-6 toys out in the living room and they need to go in his toy box. He is down for his nap. I will end up doing it. I'm just not sure if we should be doing each time.

I should also mention that we don't really "enforce" it. We are just trying to get him used to picking up stuff after himself. We walk  him over to his toys and then back to the toy box. He is starting to get the idea of how it works and will put some toys away by himself. He will also start to take them out again. It's all still a learning process.

  • We don't put stuff away during the day or even at night all the time.  It's mostly big stuff out with only a couple small toys.  Every few days, DH does a total pickup and vacume.  Livy doesn't do anything right now.  As we approach her first b-day, I'll start.

  • I haven't even thought to do this yet. As soon as I put anything away, LO finds great joy in tossing every toy out of the toy box and pulling every book out of the bookshelf. I think he is too young to understand just yet.
  • The only reason we do it is because they started it at Gymboree. The class for the 10-12 monthers is when it started for Z. They sing a song and everyone brings toys to the bucket. I figured since he was learning it there then we should continue it at home.

I'm relieved that it's not common. I was thinking my kid is broken. Stick out tongue

  • When Liam is able to walk and stoop and pick things up on his own then I will start introducing/enforcing the concept.  I figure that once he has the proper motor skills then he will be excited to participate in the "clean up game".

They don't do this in our Gymboree class.

  • We used to sing a song in my toddler class, and it usually only took the kids (ages 18mo - 3 yrs) a few days to get the concept. I don't plan to start until she is about 14-15 months.

I was suprised to see it done. It's mostly the older kids who get it. Z is doing good for following the pack. He also kind of gets it when we are home.
