School-Aged Children

Growing pains?

This is my first post on the school-age children board!!  I have a question for you.  My son is 4 and complains a lot about his legs hurting...usually at night, occasionally first thing in the morning when he wakes up.  It seems to be both legs...tonight it was behind his knees, the other day it was in his thighs...it just depends.  He had the flu and strep throat recently, I initially thought it was all related, but even though the flu and strep are gone, the leg pains remain.  He has been complaining about it for about 2 months.  Thoughts?

Re: Growing pains?

  • I know everyone says this, but I would check with your pedi.  Two months seems like a long time to me.  I will say this, growing up I had a good friend that would have growing pains so bad they woke her up in the middle of the night and she would have to soak in the tub.

  • My middle DD had similar sounding issues with growing pains.  Try teaching him to stretch before bed, encourage him to drink more water, and see if giving him a daily banana helps.  Those rice-filled pillows that you microwave until they're warm seemed to help too.
    .
  • my son has had them for the past 2 years (very infrequently). I had them as a child the Pedi said I had Osgood Slaughters Disease (fancy talk for growing pains).

Sometimes we give our son childrens asprin or ice for the pain their  is also RICE = Rest Ice Compression Elevation

Look up Osgood Slaughters and see if that fits

  • I'm going to second Dandelion's suggestions...my two DD's (ages 8 and 12) both went through these "growing pains" at different ages.  Pedi encouraged more potassium (bananas, tomatoes, etc.) and stretching exercises, but I know that pedis have mixed feelings about whether a postassium-rich diet actually helps.  In my experience with my girls it did make a difference, and to this day we stick with it!
  • My ds1 has/had them a lot... but never for two months in a row, usually once every few months and usually after a lot of physical activity days.

we mostly just rubbed behind his knees and gave tylenol on rare occasions. I know a few / kids pple with similar pains.

  • My DD never complained about this; my DS tells me his legs ache periodically, usually before bed.  Sometimes I think it's growing pains, but sometimes I think it's just fatigue after a hard day of running and jumping around.

I think 2 months is also a long time to hear consistent complaints about this issue from a child.  I'd feel justified in going to the doctor at this point.

  • Ds  use to complain a lot about his legs, specifically behind his knees. My pedi just wrote it off as growing pains but after nearly 6 months I felt like it had to be something else. I took him to a pediatric chiropractor who found that his hips were majorly out of alignment (as well as a small spot in his mid back). He proved it to me by having ds stand on 2 scales. Typically your bodyweigh would be evenly distributed & the scales should read the same weight. But ds's left scale was about 8 lbs lighter! Because his hips were off it was causing the ligaments & tendons to start pulling on his muscles and bones. Anyways, after 1 adjustment per week, about 4-6 months later his complaing stopped!

  • I have two boys one 10 (almost 11) and he never went through it... but I have a 5 yr old who out of no where all of a sudden would rouch and rub his thighs and feet and say even his hips hurt. I took him to the peds after a few weeks and they said it was pretty intense so they drew blood and among other things tested for arthritis, But it was Growing Pains she just said that when he got them all I could do was bath massage with lotion and on really bad days give him something for pain... Thats it. I was amazed but it has slowly gone away and I hope it doesnt make any rude comebacks. You should check with the Pediatrician just to make sure, but all in all... I think most people get the response I did. Best of luck... and streching before bedtime does help too =)
