Learning to crawl

When your babies were learning to crawl, did they crawl backward and sideways? If so, how long was it before they started to actually move forward?

Re: Learning to crawl

  • Hehehehe, awww.

Margaux had some trouble with forward, but I can't remember how long it took her to figure it out. It wasn't very long.

  • I don't think C ever went in reverse or sideways.

  • DS started rolling to get places around 3 or 4 months, then he scooted backwards for a month or so, then he kind of belly-flopped until he was nearly 11 months. He only crawled properly for a few weeks before walking.
  • DD rolled, scooted, lunged, and pushed backwards until last week!  Crawling is slow, but she is movingSmile

  • My little guy did the backward thing for maybe 4-5 days. He then would drop onto his belly and army crawl (for maybe a week).  Now he is a crawling machine.  Getting into everything!  It's been almost a week now and he pulls himself up to standing wherever he gets the opportunity.

I'm constantly running around and making sure things are picked up and that he can't get into anything he's not supposed to. Also just used my new steam mop  (Shark Light & Easy) to keep my little crawler clean. I LOVE it - worked great and I don't have to worry about nasty cleaner residue on the floors!

  • Ada did all sorts of things before putting it all together enough to propel herself forward. I'm fudging here, but I don't think it was more than 2 weeks from movement to purposeful crawl.

  • Sounds like with everything else it depends on the child. My eldest barely crawled at all...basically went strait to walking. Victor loves to stand and jump, but has been trying to crawl for about a week now. He gets up on his knees and rocks back and forth, scoots on his stomache and uses his arms to push himself in circles or rolls over, and can now crawl on his knees backward. He's a strong little fella, but it's so strange to me to see him go backward. My eldest has high-functioning autism so it's so great to experience these milestones on schedule. Victor is quite a talker, too. His first word was momma! Smile

  • I can't answer this very well because DD#1 never crawled. She butt-scooted and she waited to do that until about 16 months.

  • Rachel goes backwards. I call it her worm. She can't quite get herself propelled forward yet. She has been going backwards for about 1.5 months now.  I think it will be anytime now that she will start crawling forward.

  • Michael has finally mastered forward crawl this last week.  He will still lunge if something is just out of reach.
