Solid food

Why can't all babies be the same?!?

Sprout drinks too much formula (for the past few weeks, he's needed 36oz to be satisfied) so the pedi yesterday said to significantly up his solid food intake and try to reduce the formula intake to no more than 32oz. I forgot to ask how many "meals" I should increase.

Currently, we feed him at night and as much as he wants. I make his food, but I'd estimate it's about the amount in a jar. We are starting today to do a breakfast feeding too.

Should we do a lunch feeding as well?  And, the pedi recommended introducing a protein source ASAP. What was your baby's first protein source?

Re: Solid food

  • really? he's only 6mo old! IMO your pedi is over-reacting

I know for eBFed babies, their BM needs stay the same until 8mo old, at which point it's OK to decrease the amount of BM.

tofu is a good choice for protein but the recommended age for that is 8mo old; the same for baby yogurt and cheeses.  there are some meats in a jar (pureed) - chicken, turkey, etc

  • We do about 2-3 tablespoons of food at each feeding (4 times a day).

We give her a cereal for her first and last feeding.  The 2 mid-day feedings we give her fruits or veggies.  I've found that the little bit of solid has decreased the amount of milk she drinks.  She'll take between 4 and 8 oz of milk after her solids (so about 24-30 oz a day now when she used to take 30-36oz a day before we started solids).

  • At 6 months, we did 2 meals a day, lunch and dinner - I didn't have my act together for baby's breakfast before work back then.  Isn't there a 6 month growth spurt?  Could Sprout be in it right now?
  • We offer 3 "meals" a day - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He doesn't always take breakfast and he doesn't always eat all we offer. DS had his 6 month checkup today and pedi said his eating habits were all right on for where he should be. His "meals" are all 2 oz or less, so not very big (we also do homemade foods so a jar or less). For the feedings when he gets solids, we do the solids first and then a 5 oz bottle. His other feedings (non-solids) are typically 6 oz, except for an 8 oz bottle before bedtime. He doesn't seem to miss the one extra ounce when he gets solids but at first we were still giving him 6 then and he would take it. So, you might try dropping just and ounce here and there when he is having solids - it will reduce his overall formula intake and might make him hungier at other feedings for solids. We haven't done proteins yet but will do yogurt and chicken soon.

  • I'm pretty sure this isn't a growth spurt as it's been this way for at least 3 weeks & I thought growth spurts don't last that long.

And, from what I've read formula is created assuming babies won't eat more than 32oz and if they drink more than that they get way too much iron.  Or something like that (I look into this awhile ago when he was starting to really up his consumption).  I trust my pedi's advice...it's not like I'm going to starve the kid since I'll be replacing the calories (which are about 100 for the 4oz of formula I'm trying to drop) with solid food. The kid already can consume 1 mushed up banana in a sitting (that's 100 calories right there)!

I'll start by doing 2 meals/day this weekend & see if he needs more.  He really loves solid food, so that's lucky!

  • He eats a whole banana at once? Wow that's one hungry kid! We just started M on solids, and we're doing 2 meals a day, but they're pretty small (like 1 Tbsp). If Sprout is currently eating one meal/day, I would increase to two meals before jumping to three. I've heard some babies can get constipated from solids, so I'd go gradually.

  • DD loved greek yogurt when she was that age and it was an easy breakfast :-) (Plus bonus for being a good source of protein).

Can you introduce dairy that early?  I can't keep with all this stuff!

I have heard conflicting things but our pediatrician suggested the yogurt at our 6 month appointment so I went with the suggestion :-)

    it's frustrating, isn't it?!?

FWIW, we tried giving him a very small amount of mushed chickpeas last night b/c we had those on hand & dinner was a bit hectic. I was worried about gas, but thus far he seems OK (he hated them plain though...only ate them if I mixed the bite with acorn squash puree). I also found conflicting info on introducing legumes.

  • At that age we did rice cereal and pureed veggies - carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, zucchini, butternut squash.  I would just bake them until they could be pureed and added some breast milk to thin it some.  We offered him a bit of food three times a day.
