Hospital stay for my 5 week old

Monday evening (1/17) my LO started sounding congested.  By Tuesday afternoon she also had a cough.  I called and made an appointment with our pediatritian for Wednesday morning.  Tuesday night was rough because my poor LO kept coughing making it hard for both of us to sleep.

DH and I took Ava to the doctors on Wednesday.  They monitored her breathing and gave her a couple of breathing treatments.  The doctor first said she had broncilitis and then did a nose swab that came back positive for RSV.  The doctor wanted us to take her to have a chest x-ray but after further monitoring, wanted to have her admitted to the hospital for overnight observation.

We got settled into the hospital room, it was very upsetting to see her laying in the hospital bed.  I could tell my little girl was not feeling good though and was glad she was getting care.  They ended up keeping her until this morning.  They did more breathing treatments and suctioning to help get rid of the congestion.  On Thursday afternoon they had to put her on oxygen because she was having trouble breathing on her own.  She was on oxygen until Saturday afternoon.  She was taken off of it at that time and was able to breathe on her own all Saturday night into Sunday.  It was such a relief when the doctor said she could come home this morning.

I'm glad we got her checked out right away and that it didn't turn into anything more serious.  She never developed a fever and ate pretty good her entire hospital stay. I hate to think what could have happened had we not acted right away.

  • Oh Man. RSV is no joke. My older niece had it when she was a baby. Poor Ava, I hope she feels better.

  • Oh my goodness!!  I am so glad that Ava is feeling better!  This freaks me out a bit though, because E has been congested for a few days now.  How much was Ava coughing?

  • She was coughing pretty frequently, about every ten minutes or so.  Tuesday night she would start coughing and I would pick her up to console her.  She would fall asleep on my chest.  I would lay her back down and it wouldn't be long before she would start coughing again.
  • Glad you  took her in and she's okay now after staying in the hospital.  RSV is the pits! especially for the little ones.  Take care!
