1st Trimester

Asthma and pregnancy anyone else?

I have really bad asthma and I know that I have to take my medication. I stopped my preventative because of all the risks. I will probably feel better in the second tri for that but in the meantime I am taking my rescue inhaler. Anyone else having to deal with this?

Re: Asthma and pregnancy anyone else?

  • I have asthma and just got medication for a nasty upper respiratory infection. I have been taking albuterol for the asthma and it seems to be helping a bit. My Dr. said it was perfectly fine to take during pregnancy. Good luck!

  • My OB felt pretty strongly that I should continue my daily (Advair) instead of relying on my rescue inhaler alone.  I felt much better a day or two after re-starting my Advair!  Did you stop your preventative at your OB's advice or on your own?

I stopped it on my own. I am very cautious in the first tri. I remember in my second tri with DD that I had advair. My insurance no longer covers that so I am on to flovent and when I looked it up it says in animals it caused slow embryonic growth and cleft pallet. I know I need to breath but its so scary!

  • My doctor put me on Pulmicort for daily inhalation.  It has actually been tested on pregnant women and is safe.  I also have my albuterol rescue inhaler.  I have not had any problems since using Pulmicort.  I know I posted about this a few weeks ago and a lot of the ladies on this board stated they used Pulmicort as well.

This! I think you really should discuss with your OB. Despite what you've read online, if you have bad asthma, you really need to be on some sort of preventative. There are other options.

  • I am still taking my Preventative as well as a rescue as needed. I take Pulmimcort and Singulair. I took both of these with my pregnancy with DS and he turned out just fine :)

I stopped taking Singulair b/c the nurse at my OB's said that I should unless my asthma got really bad. I've had to take my albuterol inhaler more than usual, but it isn't too bad.
