Parenting after a Loss

How much to tip?

DH and I are paying a babysitter tonight to watch DS while he sleeps for about 2 hours.  This girl charges $8/hr so it would be about $16 total. How much do we tip?

Re: How much to tip?

  • I didn't realize you are supposed to tip the babysitter? Especially for 2 hrs, so I am interested in the responses.

When I babysat during my teen years I just charged a flat rate per hour and that is what I got.

Is it a teen or adult?

  • If you get home and see that she's cleaned or something, maybe give her a 20, but otherwise, I didn't really think babysitting required tipping.

  • Really? I had no idea. I always got tips when I was a kid.  She's 18 or 19.  She's in college.

  • Well, I never had an hourly rate that I charged either. I went, watched the kids, and they handed me some $$. Some were really generous, some, well, it wasn't worth my time but I loved the kids, so I kept it up... and I was in JR high and didn't know any better!

  • I wouldn't really tip a babysitter unless they did something extra but I would just give her an even $20 just because it's easier than coming up with change. I'm lazy that way!

I agree.  I also never thought to tip babysitters. I never was tipped but I got paid a pretty high hourly rate ($12-$15/hr).

  • I'd probably just give her $20.

    this.

If the house is messier, baby screaming, and she keeps answering text messages while you talk: no tip

If all is quiet, and at least as clean as you left it, you can make it an even $20

  • Yeah, her sole job this evening will be to watch TV/do her homework while DS sleeps upstairs.  I will say she is driving like 40 mins to make $8/hr. I hardly think it's worth the gas money... although maybe her parents pay for her gas, I don't know.

  • I have never heard of tipping a babysitter, and I think $8 an hour is a lot (at least where we live)
  • We tip our babysitter.  She provides her own transportation so we pay her for travel time.  Also, she is AWESOME the house is always perfect and everything is in order.  We tip her usually an extra hour.  If we are late maybe more.  We tip her b/c we want her coming to babysit when we need her.  Good babysitters are hard to find.
