1 month olds and bedtime

My little Cristian does well all day long with napping except for the last bottle of the night!? ?I take it this is normal for 1 month olds huh??

?For those with 1 month olds - or for those who have any advice to give - what are your bedtime routines? ?I wonder if there's something different I should be doing...? ?He sleeps pretty good once he's asleep - the issue with bedtime seems to be getting him to fall asleep.

?TIA!?

Re: 1 month olds and bedtime

  • My memories are a bit of haze from when G. was a month old, but if I remember correctly, we weren't anywhere near attaining a schedule. I think the longest she would sleep was maybe 4-5 hours before she'd wake for a feeding. Her bedtime was all over the place - sometimes at 10 p.m. one day and midnight the next. Regarding the routine, we would give her a bath around 8 or 8:30, feed her and try to put her down. The only parts of this?equation?that actually worked were the bath and feed. :)

Getting her to fall asleep usually involved a feeding and then me creeping into the next room to put her down. Sometimes there was rocking (actually, lots of times there was rocking). It was pretty much a crap shoot at that point. Whatever worked one day didn't work the next. I hate to say it, but I don't think you can expect much continuity this early with your child. When they're this young, you just do whatever you can to get them to sleep. I hope this is of some help!?

  • We did a bath around 8, followed by bottle time with Daddy (I pumped) and then I would go to bed while DH tended to Polly until she either fell asleep or got hungry again.  He did this so I could get some extra sleep in since I was getting up with her a lot at night.  Around 2 months Polly seemed to be more consistent.  Hang in there!!
  • Tess is 8 weeks old and we're just now getting something that resembles a bed time.  For during the day are you waking him up ever 3 or 4 hours?  Try to keep him up for at least 15 minutes or more after he eats before he goes back to sleep during the day and then whenever you put him down for the night, be it 8, 10, 12, whenever, let him wake on his own.  After doing this for about 2 weeks Tess at least figured out her days/nights for the most part.  Now I give her a bath right around 8:30 and feed her and have her in the bed close to 9:00 and she seems to be getting the hang of it.
  • With Alec, during the day, we made sure and fed him every 3 hours.  After each feeding, we would play with him and than have him take a little nap and this repeated throughout the day until we got to 8ish.

We would give him a bath, than bottle and than put him down.

By following the routine during the day, it helped us with the nightime.

  • My one month old doesn't have a bedtime yet, I still just put him in the bassinet whenever I go to bed (sometime between 10-12).  I usually bathe him and put his jammies on around 8pm, when DS #1 is getting his bath with DH.  I just love the snuggle time with him in the evenings after DS #1 goes to bed, I'm reluctant to start putting him to bed earlier!  But my advice for bedtime would be bath, bottle/boob, book, and bed.

  • I don't think we were anywhere near a routine at 1 month.  For awhile C was not going to bed until 11pm and the waking up a couple of times through the night.  I think around 6 weeks - 2 months we started trying to get some sort of routine established.   I am not saying it worked all the time, but we were just trying to get her used to something.  Now at almost 4 months she goes to bed every night around 8-8:30 and usualy sleeps until 5-6am.  Don't stress about right now, he will start to settle down.

  • We still don't have an official bedtime or routine, although we are hoping to get a routine started this week. We just feed her when she's hungry and let her sleep when she's tired. I'm going to start waking her up earlier from her daytime naps just to make sure she doesn't sleep too long and saves some for nighttime. I don't think you can do too much at 1 month to encourage a specific sleep pattern.

  • Thank you all for your wonderful advice!! ?We're not too far off from what you all have suggested...its so helpful to have you experienced moms to turn to - I love this board! ?:)

  • We're pretty much in line with other posters as well.  I wake DS every 3-3.5 hours during the day to eat.  At night, he goes to bed sometime between 8:30 to 10:30 depending on when that last feeding falls (3 -3.5 hrs from last feeding).  He is 7.5 weeks old and is definitely not consistent yet.  Sometimes he'll sleep 6-7 hours straight, but most of the time it's about 4 hours.  The only thing I noticed when reading through the other responses is that our routine is opposite of others.  At night we feed him and then give him a bath, snuggle/read and then put him in his crib.
