Babies on the Brain

Sore throat remedies?

Good morning... Thought I would ask all of you what sore throat remedies have worked well for you in the past.  I've been trying to do things a little more on the natural side and as safe for the baby as possible, but I have had the worst cold that I have probably had in YEARS. Sad I honestly can't remember the last time I have felt this horrible.

It started off with a sore throat and progressed to being stuffy and congested, and now that I guess I'm getting rid of more snot (sorry) than any one person has a right to have, my throat has gone back to being on fire.  I've tried some hot herbal teas and a hot honey lemon water concoction, but nothing seems to do a whole lot of good for more than a few minutes.

Any miracle cures out there? TIA!

  • I have a few for temporary relief. I don't like to take meds so what I do is I will drink hot tea (decaffeinated if you like), gargle with warm salt water, and eat tons of popsicles.

Thanks!  I don't really take meds, either -- cough drops are the strongest thing, lol, and I've been trying to use those sparingly... I will try the salt water (I'd forgotten that someone had told me about that a few years ago) and get DH pick up some popsicles on his way home from work when he gets our other groceries.

One thing I can say through this last week of feeling like garbage is that I am pleased to see that DH has stepped up to the plate a little bit more around the house. I guess something good can come out of anything. Wink

  • Hot Jello.  Sounds weird, I know.  Stir a few tsp. of Jello (to taste) into a mug of hot water.  The Jello will coat your throat a bit so the relief seems to last longer than just hot water or tea.  And it's pretty darn tasty, too. :-)

  • Get Ricola cough drops. I was sick in December and wasn't sure if I was pregnant, so wanted to be safe and I checked with the Pharmacist. They really helped as long as I kept one in my mouth at all times. They're gentle and not awful like Halls.

Also, get a Netti Pot. If your throat is hurting due to excess drainage, then really clearing out your sinuses will help a lot. I was nervous to use it the first time and laughed at myself while watching in the mirror, but the results were honestly amazing. So thankful I discovered that!

  • I know you are trying to go natural, but Tylenol is really quite safe. It is my favorite pain reliever for a sore throat. As for the tickle - Ricola. Love Ricola.

  • Thanks, everyone!  I will get DH to pick up some Ricola cough drops when he leaves work today :-)

I have to say that Neti pot thing sounds a bit scary, but I may get one and give it a try if I'm not improving more by tomorrow.

I've been really blowing the heck out of my poor nose today and that actually does seem to be helping some, just forcing all this junk out.

I'm sure Baby O. has really enjoyed having her peace disturbed with my racking coughs these last couple of days, lol.

  • I know it sounds gross but gargle with salt water should help for the time being.

Seriously, get the Netti Pot. It will change your life. Watch a video of it being done on youtube. It doesn't hurt or anything like that, actually feels really good and provides a lot of relief. For me it meant I could actually breathe at night when I went to bed which was a blessing in and of itself!

Well, you just might have convinced me.  I will have to see about getting one tomorrow, since I don't think either one of us is getting back out tonight... I can live with Vicks vapor rub one more night, lol.

  • I'm a messy gargler, so I always salt-water gargle in the shower. Hold on to that useless washcloth bar firmly, tilt your head way back and let loose. You can really get the back of your throat that way.

LOL, that's good advice... It's been awhile since I've used that remedy, but I do seem to recall making a bit of a mess of it the last time I did.
