Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Which sleep training method is best for toddlers?

I'm not sure how it happened but DH and I are now rocking DD to sleep every night.  She STTN, but this rocking to sleep needs to stop.  We let her CIO when she was 7 months old, she was ready and it went incredibly well.  Except for some random rough patches here and there, she's been a great sleeper since.  I feel like she's too old to CIO now so I'm looking at two other methods: The Sleep Easy Solution and Good Night, Sleep Tight.  I haven't bought either book yet, I wanted some feedback on them first.  TIA!

Re: Which sleep training method is best for toddlers?

  • We recently started using some of the things from "No Cry Sleep Solution" and they've actually worked miracles for my kid.  Our main issue before was with naps: we would have to hold him the entire time, or fight him for 45 minutes or more, to get him to nap for 30 minutes at a time.  I was losing my mind.  We used a few of her suggestions, and naps have become a breeze.  It's a "slow and steady" sort of approach, but it worked for us.

Whatever you decide to use, good luck!  Sleep issues are incredibly stressful.

We have the No Cry Sleep Solution.  But today when we were at the bookstore, I saw the No Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers.  I didn't realize there was a different book.  Did you use methods from the one for toddlers?  Or do you have the same book I have?  I read the book when we were deciding which sleep training method to use with DD when she was 7 months old.  I don't remember if there was a section in there for older babies/toddlers.

  • I have the original.  They have a section of suggestions for older kids.  I liked that it's a 'choose what works for you' approach.  They offer you a variety of things that may work, and you make decisions about what works for your family.

I can't say enough good things about it.  I'm just happy he sleeps, now.  Oh, and FWIW, we tried CIO, and Ferber, and neither worked for us at all.

  • Just read Ferber's book. Implemented it. One tough night and 11 hours or more straight every night since. He addresses older children as well.

  • We let DD CIO around 7 mo as well and she did great until around 16-17mo. She stopped SSTN and was up every few hrs crying. There were no sleep training methods worked for us after just over 2 months of trying.

So we just changed her bed time routine all together. Normally she would fall asleep with us and we would lay her down in her crib after she was asleep. Now we cuddle and then when she looks ready we tell her it's time to go night night. She says "ok" and the 3 of us go into her room. We do hugs and kisses, tuck her in, turn on the twilight turtle, and go back to our room. She has been STTN ever since.

  • Personally we used the book 'Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby' ... Sort of a CIO method (there are 'time frames' for nap time / bedtime that you let them CIO). Anyway, it's worked great for us! And if / when something changes I refer to the book and it offers solutions through 36 months (I think).

BTW TWILIGHT TURTLE ROCK! It has been a lifesaver for a very longtime. DS actually gets excited when he sees it (or calms quickly after we leave as long as his Tortuga (turtle in Spanish ;) is on....
