Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8+ month old food/water question

Does your LO drink any water?  Aiden's been fighting bottles and so even though we try to get 24 ounces in him, sometimes we only get 18-20.  I don't offer him water because I don't want to fill him up.

As for food, he eats a couple tablespoons of yogurt with maybe 1 tablespoon of oatmeal and a little fruit puree for breakfast.  For lunch and dinner he'll eat an entire container of something (veggie or meat puree) with a little bit of  fruit.  He has Cheerios for a snack and he's obsessed with them :)

He's a peanut but so am I.  This is probably a dumb question but, does food have any impact on  height?  He's not too thin but he's proportionate since he's kind of short I think.  If I feed him more it would just impact his weight, right?  I want to make sure I'm not adding to his peanut-ness :-p

Re: 8+ month old food/water question

  • Well, we're not 8 months yet, but I'm gonna chime in.  I offer a sippy cup with water in it after each meal. She doesn't drink very much of it.  And I have to hold the cup if I want her to really drink.  She has about 2 tablespoons of oatmeal and a containter of fruit for breakfast. A container of veggies for lunch and a containter of meat and a container of veggies for supper. Plus 20-24 oz of formula.  It sounds like my LO is a piggy when I write it all out!

I don't know if it can impact height. My guess is that height mostly comes from genetics.

  • I don't really know the answer, but I give DS a sippy with water at meals and I don't think it makes him drink less formula.  FWIW, my DS has never consistently taken more than 25 or so oz. in a day and he's doing fine.

  • We give DD about the same amount of food you do and are also having trouble with the formula. She is also pretty teeny so I've been worried about this lately. I do offer her a sippy with some water in it at some of her meals- though most of it ends up everywhere but in her mouth! So far she takes in the same amount of food and formula regardless of whether I give her some water. As for your other question- I would think if you gave your LO more food he would just chunk up :)
  • If DS isn't drinking 20-24+ ozs of formula per day, I really wouldn't push water, I would focus on getting him to drink more formula.  Our pedi told us that if DS wasn't drinking at least that much formula that we should cut back on solids until his formula intake increased since that is where his primary nutrition should be coming from.  FWIW.
