Viacord?

What are your thoughts on Viacord, other than its freaking expensive and prolly cant afford it, but is anyone going to look more into it?

Re: Viacord?

  • We decided against it.
While it has it's benefits, we just didn't think it was worth all that money. People have lived for thousands of years without their blood cord, and we all made it just fine.

  • That's a tough decision to me.  I don't really have the $ for it right now, but it *could* "save money" and a lot of tears in the future.  I don't know too much about it so I think I'll need to read more before I decide!

  • we banked my son's cord blood with viacord. it was a gift from my parents and i think it's a great idea. *** happens, people get sick and i've known a TON of people that have had some form of cancer. it sucks, but it's the truth. i would rather have the safety net of Liam's cord blood being taken care of. we know it's there incase we need it.

  • i have cancer in my immediate family so i really, really, really want to do it (not to mention some marrow and blood issues in extended family with the same racial combo as myself) but i just don't think i can come up with the money. heavy sigh.

  • What are some of the other places that collect and store?
  • We didn't and won't with this one either.  If we were to do anything with the cord blood, we would donate it to a bank.  The truth is that the blood is only a guaranteed match for the child it came from.  Siblings and relatives can rarely use it and you've got a better chance at getting a suitable match from a cord blood bank - same as with regular blood transfusions.  And that means, if you're scared of future illness in your family, you have to continue banking it for every child you have.  The cost adds up.  Donation is free, and then it is out there and available to any possible match that needs it, which to me makes more sense because it has a better chance of actually getting used vs. sitting in a freezer for the rest of my child's life doing nobody any good.

  • I looked into donating cord blood and there are only 4 hospitals that I found that participate in cord blood donating.  Of Course, non are the hospital I will be delivering at.
