Success after IF

Freaked out about possible Fifths Disease.. anyone have experience? (PIP)

DS's cheeks became unexplicably red today (see PIP - 1st pic was taken 3 hours before 2nd pic)  I called the nurses line and they said not to worry about anything, then they called back and asked if I had heard of Fifths Disease.  Both DH and I got it in HS (I gave it to him, by little bro gave it to me...oops) so I know that it isn't bothersome to actually have.

My concern is for my sister. She is 4 weeks pg (after struggling with IF nonetheless) and she was playing with DS today (pre-cheeks).  I am so worried she will catch it and it is harmful to pg women.

So my question is this... if your LO had it - did it start out with the rosy cheeks?  Any other explanations for the red cheeks?  He was SUPER cranky this morning and drooling so I thought he was teething... then he got the cherry cheeks and now I'm worried it was more....

Any thoughts are welcome!

  • There's a panel of tests they can run to check for it. I was CONVINCED I had it mid-preg this time. It takes a while to come back but its worth the peace of mind. I'd call your pedi and in the mean time, do not spin up your sister...she doesn't need that until you know for sure.

FWIW, I didn't have it. DD's cheeks get this way when she gets sick (regardless of fever present).

  • it was going around school when i was pg - i talked to my son's doc (who is a FP doc) and he said not to worry- it's very rare for an adult to actually get it.
  • my kids get rosy cheeks all the time, just like the cheeks in the pic.  Teething, sick, over tired, dry cheeks etc.  There could be TONS of reasons.  I'd put a little lotion on it tonight and see how he is in the morning.

  • Garrison's cheeks look like that all the time.  I mean, not consistently, but they will just get rosy almost out of nowhere (though cold, heat, teething, etc is probably the usual cause).
