MIL almost choked DD

Ugh, I'm so irritated right now.  We went to visit DH's grandparents and my ILs were there.  We had some cantaloupe for dessert, and I told MIL she could give DD some cut-up cantaloupe.  So what does she do?  She sticks an ice-cube sized chunk of cantaloupe in Abby's mouth.  The poor thing didn't know what to do!  She was all the way on the other side of the table, and once I noticed what was happening I was about to yell out "TAKE THAT OUT OF HER MOUTH!" but the last thing I wanted to do was yell and make Abby panic and choke.  So I calmly said "That's too big.  She's going to choke. Please take it out of her mouth".  And it's a good thing I said something, because just as MIL tried to get it out of Abby's mouth, she started trying to chew it and started gagging.  MIL had to do a finger-sweep to get it out of her mouth (thank God DH showed her how to do it just last week!).

Does she have no common sense?  Who gives a GIANT hunk of food to a baby and allows them to put the whole thing in their mouth???  Ugh.

  • At least it was fruit.  My uncle likes to try to give my kid french fries and ribs.

  • Wow! I am so sorry! All I can say is you have some MAJOR self control lol! I probably would have came across that table and slapped my MIL... but then again our relationship isn't that great and I have a lot of pent up frustration.

Anyways I am glad your DD is alright and that you were right there!

  • *eyeroll* what are people thinking, honestly?  I'm scared to give DD finger food at all.  Even the puffs make me nervous.

Puffs will change your life.  I had DS out all day today thanks to puffs!  You have a better chance of winning the lottery than your LO choking on a puff.  I promise.

My dad asked me why Collin couldn't "suck on a french fry" the other day.  I was like, "why, so he can suck the grease out of of it and THEN eat it?" not to mention the fact that white potatoes aren't nutritionally dense by any means.

  • Yeah, that definitely lacked some foresight.  It was good that you stayed calm...I reacted a bit too much the first time N threw up while eating solids and I think it spooked her for a few days.  She was a lot more hesitant with food and it took some persistence to get her to eat again.  So, good job!

Also, I really want cantaloupe now...

I break the puffs in half.  Its probably paranoid but it makes me feel better.  She only gets about 1 out of 10 in her mouth.  The rest get brushed onto the floor and the dog eats them.

  • Now, I fully disagree with someone going against your parenting choices, but handing a baby a handful sized chunk of food isn't all that crazy. In fact, it's called BLWing. The idea is that they nom off what they can handle.

DD has been doing it- choke free- since 6 months old. At a young age their gag reflex is much more forward in their mouth than the choke reflux, so it's actually beneficial for them to have the opportunity to learn how to nom down food before the gag reflux is close to the choke reflux.

I'm on board with what you're saying, but I think the piece OP mentioned is smaller than what's recommended for BLW. But in my mind gagging is nbd. DS gags on food all the time. It's how he learns what he can handle.

Yup, from what I gathered from the OP, her MIL gave her DD a piece of the fruit that was too small to fit the BLW recommendations, and didn't just give it to the baby to try, but put it in her mouth.  Poor Abby didn't know what to do with that!  I believe OP does either fully or semi BLW with her DD  (I've seen pics of her lil one eating a bagel with cream cheese, but the pieces were big enough for her to grab onto and feed herself and they weren't popped into her mouth.) so I'm sure she's ok with the BLW idea just not when the pieces of food are the wrong size and shoved in her DD's mouth :)
