NSAIFR: Anyone have a Volvo or an Acura?

It's time to get a new mommymobile.  Anyone happen to have a Volvo XC90 or an Acura MDX?  I'd greatly appreciate any insight if you are willing to offer it.  I can't make a decision to save my life...

Re: NSAIFR: Anyone have a Volvo or an Acura?

  • I have had both.  I'll try to list the pros and cons of each.

MDX - Super roomy.  It's wide and very spacious insides.  Great tech - I adored the navi, bluetooth, etc.  Comfy seats, good pick up, drives nice.

Cons - It had a terrible blind spot that made me nervous.  The newer cars have a blind spot detection system, which would solve the problem.  My car also had the world's loudest a/c fan that would cycle on and off all.the.time.  Drove me nuts.  I'm wondering if they fixed it on the newer model.

Volvo -  It's taller than the MDX, but more narrow.  It's definitely not as spacious.  And the tech package leaves much to be desired, but mine does have the BLIS, which I really enjoy.  Worse gas mileage than the MDX

I really liked the MDX, but I liked it because of the extra features.  I have been underwhelmed by the Volvo.  If my MDX didn't have the annoying fan and blind spot, I definitely would have kept it.

  • I have and MDX and I love it!! Of course it has it pros and cons but I recommend it. It drives really smooth and I do not think it feels all that big considering it is a full size SUV.  It is nice having the option of the 3rd row but when it is up there is almost no truck space so we leave it down the vast majority of the time.  I was surprised that the back seat is not as big as I thought. We have a rear facing Britax boulevard and the only place it fits is in the middle of the back seat and it barely fits. DH is tall so his seat is back pretty far but that is my only grip.

  • I was looking at these 2 cars as well. I had always wanted a Volvo. Ultimately I went with the MDX for the following 2 reasons : 1) MDX did better in consumer reports and 2) it is cheaper to fix. I can take it to a Honda dealer in town vs having to take it to a dealer 45 minutes away. I really love it for the most part. I still am nor quite used to the backing up camera, I'd still prefer good ol' mirrors and looking back but that is a bit hard due to the size of the car. When putting the car in reverse the driver side mirror turns downward which I don't like/need. But these are minor issues and chances are most new SUVs do these things ( my previous car was a 1994 Subaru so relatively low tech ) I don't regret buying this instead of the Volvo. And even with the 3rd row down there is enough room for a stroller and a few other things. If you had to take suitcases to go on a trip though, you'd need to put them on the roof...
