Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What was the transition from crib to toddler bed like?

Lots of questions since C has begun to try to escape hers!

Why did you decide to make the transition?

Did you get a toddler bed right off, or take the front off the crib (not sure exactly how that works, but I've seen people do it)?

Did you put up a railing?

Did they sleep well right off or did it take awhile?

Re: What was the transition from crib to toddler bed like?

  • We did it a few weeks ago, because acrobat boy almost took a swan dive out of his crib after a nap one day (and it's lucky I got in there in time to catch/stop him).  It's gone great so far, except for them wanting to play instead of sleep for the first half hour or so of most nap times.

We just took the fronts off their cribs, BUT they are supposed to do that, and come with the extra board needed to turn the cribs into a toddler bed.  If your crib doesn't have a kit to do that, DON'T just take the front off the crib, get an actual toddler bed, or even go straight to a twin.

I did get bed railings for them, because the first night DS fell out twice (didn't make a peep just crawled back into bed) and DD fell out once (she was totally fine but not happy about it).  It's only like an 8 inch drop to the floor, so it's not like they would get hurt falling out, but who really wants to fall even 8 inches when they're fast asleep you know?

They've been sleeping like normal, though sometimes they switch or share beds instead of staying in their own all night.  The second and third nights, DS acted like he was scared of the bed for some reason, but I'd sit there and comfort him, and then talk to him as I left the room, and from the hallway with the door shut, until he fell asleep.

Okay, that's what I was thinking. I do not think our crib turns into a toddler bed like that, but I will double check. Thanks for the info!
