Success after IF

Anyone know about a link between...

Clomid and ectopics? I started thinking about it this morning because I've been pregnant twice and both times had ectopics both times on clomid. Had surgery while pg with DD, but they had resolved on thier own by the time I was in surgery. I found some info online about it, but thought I'd ask here since you are all such a wealth of knowledge. I emailed my nurse practitioner about it this morning not expecting a response until Monday. I'm on CD2 and was planning to start the clomid again tomorrow. She replied to hold off on TTC this cycle (because my last beta wasn't yet zero) and she would discuss the clomid/ectopic connection with my RE. I'm frustrated cause I really wanted to TTC right away and now she's put a stop to it this cycle. She probably didn't think AF would come so soon when my beta Thursday was 38. Anyone know anything about clomid and ectopics connection?

  • Yes, unfortunately, there is a connection. Especially when you've had a previous one (with potential scar tissue in that tube).

Clomid "puffs you up" because of the influx of hormones that are not natural to YOUR body (the reason you need Clomid in the 1st place). That said, your tubes can get puffy too, creating a narrowed path for passing.

In all pregnancies its ideal for fertilization to take place in the tube, the fertilized egg to float down to the ute and implant so the sperm SHOULD make it to the tube (so that's good to know its not totally blocked).

Have you ever been offered an HSG? A lot of women have heightened fertility afterwards due to the "blowing out the cobwebs" effect. Your doc might not be on board since you've achieved PG twice on Clomid.

Another option would be switching to a less homonally influxing drug like Femera. You get less "targets" (less mature follicles) but it can lessen the swollen effect as well.

HTH! I'm very sorry you have to deal with this. You want as few surgeries as possible for the scar tissue issues as well....I hope they can find the right combo ASAP!

  • Thanks for the detailed reply. I'm glad to know The RE won't think I'm crazy for asking this question. Your explanation of puffing up is exactly what popped into my mind at 5am when I emailed the nurse from bed. I also have allergies to other meds, aspirin and anti inflammatory meds that make me swell up so maybe clomid has that affect on me too. At one point we were going to try menopur but the nurse was concerned about higher chance of twins. I'd rather risk twins then another ectopic. I have had an HSG and it was all clear.

  • Does estradiol have this effect too? Both times my lining was thin and estradiol was added on cd8-10
