Running shoe recommendation

Thanks to pregnancy, my feet grew about half a size, so all of my shoes no longer fit. I bought a pair or Merrell running shoes after LO was born, that seemed fine at first - but now that I'm running more consistently the arch support feels non existant. My feet have been killing me after running, so I am in search of a new running shoe. Any suggestions?

I wear a size 7-71/2 and my feet are semi wide, med arch.

TIA!

Re: Running shoe recommendation

  • I would say find a store that specializes in running shoes and try some different ones on.  I love my Asics, but another person may not.  I have also tried Nike, New Balance and Under Armour - hated all of them.

I found the local running/walking shops to be way more helpful than a sporting goods/department store.  They can help you find a shoe based off of the type of surface you plan to run on, pronation, arches, etc.

  • It totally depends on the runner.  I prefer Asics because they are lighter than New Balance but you may find your a NB type of gal.  I'd go to a running store (note: NOT a super sports store, a local running store) to get properly fitted.  Good luck!
  • I think I have heard that there is one around here (I live in the boonies pretty much) that has a treadmill in the store and they watch you run, look at your feet and pick out shoes for you to try? Maybe I should try and find that place to see if they can help me! It would be nice to be able to try them out on a treadmill to see what they feel like.

That is probably a good start.  When I first tried running shoes on, they had me run laps in the store to find out what shoes would work best...

  • I've been a runner for going on 18 years and I've tried nearly every brand of running shoe.  That being said, right now Saucony is my favorite....I have high arches, a narrow foot, and I love how lightweight their shoes are.

  • I don't know if you have a store like the Boulder Running Company near you, but they will do a special test ( not sure what it's called) to determine what type of running shoe fits you best. I did the test (very flat footed), tried one like 20 pairs of shoes, and ended up going with the Nike +.

  • I swear by my Asics.  I have tried others, but always come back to Asics, particularly the Gel Kayano and more recently the Nimbus styles.  They are amazing!  You might pay a little more, but if you put a lot of miles on your shoes- they are worth it and they will last!

I agree, go to a run/walk shop.  Department/Sporting Goods store workers are not going to know what's right for your foot structure paired with the type of exercise you do.  You're more likely to find better info from someone who is actually a runner if you go into a specialty run/walk shop.

     Good Luck! ;)

  • I would say to go to a local running store and get fitted for shoes.  You only have to do this once, then you can buy shoes online when they are sale or when the running store is having a sale too.  GL!
  • If you can't get fitted at a running store, you can get fitted online using RoadRunner Sport's Shoe Dog:

  • Definitely go get fitted. A good store will let you run in the shoes to feel them out... Go with what works for your feet!

  • Definitely get fitted at a local running store and be prepared for them to size you 1/2 size up from your new larger size.

I love Brooks Adrenaline for running.  Runner's World magazine reviews running shoes a lot and can give you an idea of what is out there for your needs and gait.

     Good luck!
