Trouble TTC

Let's talk organic vs. all-natural

It's important to us to purchase food that was not developed through genetic engineering.  I have been impressed recently by the new meat options at our store, they are carrying Bare Natural Chicken and Hormel Natural Choice products.  I have been looking over the websites though and I am not sure I am convinced this is the change I am looking for.  I think I may need to just go to the co-op a few towns over and buy my meat there.

Does anyone here know anything about the guidelines for meat raising and processing?  What are the differences between "all-natural" and "organic"?

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Re: Let's talk organic vs. all-natural

  • From the USDA website:

    What Does "Natural" Mean?
All fresh meat qualifies as "natural." Products labeled "natural" cannot contain any artificial flavor or flavoring, coloring ingredient, chemical preservative, or any other artificial or synthetic ingredient; and the product and its ingredients are not more than minimally processed (ground, for example). All products claiming to be natural should be accompanied by a brief statement which explains what is meant by the term "natural."

Some companies promote their beef as "natural" because they claim their cattle weren't exposed to antibiotics or hormones and were totally raised on a range instead of being "finished" in a feedlot.

I couldn't find anything that laid out the "rules" for calling meat organic.

  • When it comes to meat, I go for all organic over natural. On top of that, I really strive for organic and free-range. I come from more of an animal welfare perspective though, I care about the animals and how they were treated while they were alive. If they are going to die, they might as well live a happy life in a pasture, not in a pen or a cage.

To me, "all natural" has more to do with the processing and making sure no chemicals and additives were added once the animal was slaughtered. That's just my understanding though, nothing scientific or official about it!

Where I live, there are what I call "happy farms" all over. They raise their animals humanely and organically and make sure the processing is humane as well. Then they sell their meat from the farm or at the local farmer's market.

This is a great resource for locating responsibly raised and processed meat and dairy. https://www.eatwild.com/products/index.html

  • I'm all natural and organic. What I look for on my eggs and meat are these words:

    - horomone free

     - antibiotic free

     - grain/grass fed

     - certified humane

I care about organic but there are also many organic products that are allowed to have certain pesticides. When you have local farmers markets in the spring-fall ask questions. Many farms follow organic structures and are even more strict in the way they raise/grown their food but they don't have the "organic" stamp.

As far as certain foods in the market I only eat Stony Field yogurts and certain products matter to me. I don't buy organic junk food because regardless of it's organic ingredients....it's still junk food :) Good luck on your organic/natural journey.
