I teach elementary school and have one student who is always asking random questions from "what is your favorite color" to "how old is your cat" usually right in the middle of a lesson. Today during reading group she asked me "Are you having a baby soon?" Thank God the aide was in the room because I was able to mumble out some quick response like "Hopefully soon" as I ran out to the ladies room. By the time I came back, the student was busy doing another activity - probably thinking of other innocent questions. The rest of the day, everytime I looked at her, I heard that question over and over in my head. It just broke my heart!
Re: Had to run out of my classroom
I am sorry for your loss and I am sorry you are having to go through this. I also teach and it's amazing some times how intuitive the kids can be and how honest their words are.
Shortly after my m/c, a student asked me about my kids and I told her I didn't have any and she insisted that she thought I was a Mom and had kids....it was hard to respond without being emotional. She wouldn't have understood my emotion, obviously, but I was so thrown off by her persistence about thinking that I was a Mom. Maybe my 8 weeks of pregnancy was sending off vibes, lol (doubt it, but hey....)
I know most of my students just assume all of their teachers are Moms, too "just because" since they know I am married and have a dog, they think I must have kids, too. It is, after all, the American dream...
