Success after IF

moms of two--or pregnant with #2 re: induction

Did your OB offer you the option of being induced early?

I was totally taken aback today when my OB said, "So we can schedule you for an induction anytime after you rech 39 weeks if you're interested."

Apparently since I had a successful vaginal delivery the first time my chances of another are very high and the likelihood of induction resulting in a c-section is very low.

It's certainly not something I would have considered with my first, but it's awfully tempting now. It would make arrangements for Henry much easier, for sure. The idea of  being able to plan ahead for this is much more appealing to me than I would've ever thought before I walked into her office this morning.

FWIW, the baby is head down and unlikely to move at this point, I'm about 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced right now.

Thoughts?

  • Well I already know I'm having scheduled c/s (just don't have the date yet), but if my Dr offered me what yours did, I'd be all over it.

So hell yes- take the scheduled induction.

  • Our situation is a bit different in that our goal (ok'd by my doctor) is to induce at 37-38 weeks assuming an amnio for lung maturity shows all is ok, as my fear of another abruption after that is so great that I can barely function as I get farther along. But my OB also said that if I can hold off till 39 weeks she can do it without the amnio. So kinda similar.

  • I had a scheduled cesarian for different reasons, but it made arrangements for DD's care much easier.

  • My DD had low fluid, so we were going to induce shortly after 39 weeks...but I went into labor on my own at 38 wks 6 days.

  • Pretty much for planning reasons I would do it. Makes it so much easier for someone to watch Henry.

My OB stripped my membranes at 39 weeks exactly and I started having mild contractions that night, by the next night I was in full blown labor and Nolan was born at 39w2d. You could always try that too. But I would just take the induction, so much easier! I had to call my Mom at 1am to come over (and she is 45 minutes away) to watch Brady so we could go to the hospital.

  • My obgyn offered me the exact same thing!  She said we will discuss it at my next appt, which will be Thursday when I am exactly 36w.  I am 90% sure that I will take her up on it, with the main reason being that it will be so much easier to plan for DD.  The closest family we have is an hour away, so having scheduled care for her would be worth it.

  • Sure it sounds nice to be able to plan... but pitocin is not a fun thing.  I know my friend who had a relatively easy 1st delivery no meds jumped on that chance... and then regretted it after feeling the pitocin and caving and getting the epidural this time...  It is much easier when your body goes into labor on it's own...  if it were me I would never choose to have pitocin unless I was really late... that's my 2 cents.

I did have pitocin the first time around, because after my water broke and I was dilated 5 cm and having contractions 2 mins apart my labor stalled. So I've gone the pitocin route before and I plan to have an epidural again in any case.

  • I was induced with my second, though it was not planned in advance (had growth u/s at 39 weeks and was immediately sent to l&d).  So it did not make the planning any easier.  However, so you have a positive induction story - I had a relatively easy first vaginal birht, total active labor about 12 hours - with the induction, I started pitocin around 2:30 and my son was born at 5:30.  yes, the contractions went from 0 to 100 very quickly (and I definitely wish I had asked for the epi sooner, as it was placed at 5:20 and basically did not take effect until after he was born) but all in all, a very successful induction!
  • Having a scheduled c/s made it so much easier to balance child care... but then my water broke 3 days before the c/s!  ;)

  • Mine didn't offer a full-on induction (though I unexpectedly ended up with one anyway, of course), but she did say she'd strip my membranes any time after 37 weeks -- just give the word.  I decided I would not do it before 39 weeks, and then only if I was feeling really uncomfortable.  If she had offered a full induction after 39 weeks, I might have gone ahead with it, but it's hard for me to say given I never got there...  I totally wouldn't blame you for doing it!  (I should warn you that the pitocin contrax get to an intolerable pain level much faster than natural labor, though!)
  • I was scheduled for an induction with my second at 38wk1d but that was because with my son there was a shoulder distocia issue and we didn't want a repeat of that.

For what it's worth, I never made it to my induction as I went into labor the night before.  So, even if you plan it out, your baby may not stick to that plan.  I see nothing wrong though with planning it for right around 39 weeks as a way to help you with childcare, etc.

  • I was induced with both of mine.  With DS it was due to his non-growth at the end and for DD it was because I didn't want to go past 40 wks, especially in light of the what happened at the end with DS.  The second induction was cake.  I chose not to get an epi due to it not working with DS and it wasn't bad at all.  I was a 3 when we started in the morning.  At 12:30 I was a 4 but then things went super fast and she was born at 2:30.  : )

  • It's not for me. I like to keep my chances of needing interventions as low as possible and by choosing induction (unless medically necessary), I feel like it would be inviting the "cascade of interventions." My philosophy is that labor is best left to to the body and not to the OB whenever possible.

  • I had a long hard labor with DS (25 hours with 4+ hours of pushing) I was offered to be induced at 39w5d. I went in and had Cryotec (a pill to soften my cervix) at 9:30pm. I was suppose to have them every three hours and just that one pill put me into labor. I got my epi at 5:30am and DD was here at 9:52. So a little over 12 hours from start to finish and it was GREAT! I had a nice dinner and then went into the hospital. DS was cared for and it was nice to know where he was and have a plan.

My guess is that I was already in early labor when I got there and the drug just put me into a good strong labor. BTW- I never had pitocin with DD

  • I was induced with my first due to medical reasons and it went successful.  I asked my doctor if I could be induced with #2, she said at 39 weeks since it wasn't medically necessary.

By the time I got called for my induction, I was already 100% effaced and 7 cm and hadn't felt one contraction when I got in there, although my contractions were not consistent so I was put on pitocin and baby #2 arrived less than 2 hours after they called me in and broke my water.  I am pretty sure I would have gone on my own sometime that weekend.

Anyways, I elected to be induced because I felt it was a little easier to plan care for my daughter, but either way I was prepared if baby came early which he didn't.

  • No, I had to push for it.  One OB was against it but my Dr. agreed b/c I was at 39w4d w/ zero progress and I had read too much on the internet about having GD babies.  He was 8.8 at birth and is 20 lbs at 4.5 months!  My water broke on it's own a few hours after they started the cervadil (two unrelated) but I don't regret my decision.  Although it was EXTREMELY hard to leave DS on Friday night, I didn't see him again until Sunday and I bawled my eyes out when he left the hosp.  I am no expert but I would do what makes you feel comfortable, GL!

  • Planning mine since baby is due same day as teens high school graduation. No way I am missing graduation
  • i had to have another scheduled c/s but it did make life easier with child care fot he twins. I was also scheduled at 37 weeks because Brady was measuring 40 weeks at 36 weeks and they didn't want me going into labor on my own during thanksgiving weekend with me needing general for my c/s.

  • I had a super easy induction with DS which was considered elective since there was no medical reason except that I was 6cm and my OB was worried that my water would break and I wouldnt make it to the hospital.

I have definitely thought about asking for another one but my OB hasnt mentioned it to me yet.  I think I might bring it up at my next appt depending on how my cervix looks.  I think if I still dont have any progress then I would be more likely to wait for it to happen on its own.

  • I had to have an induction at 39 weeks because I had GD, but my doc would have offered it if I hadn't.

I wasn't induced with DD (again, would have been at 39 weeks), and the induction with DS actually went MUCH smoother than her birth.  We started at noon and he was born after 20 minutes of pushing at 6:30 pm.
