They did the finger prick with DS first, but the results were inconclusive since the blood flowed so slowly from the finger prick. We had to come back the next day for the blood draw. Huge Pain in the a$$, poor little guy.
Depends on the person taking the blood. DS has his blood taken at 9 months to check for anemia. They actually took like like an adult; at the inside of the elbow. We did not have a blood test at 12 months. Some will do a test for lead. but like our Pedi said, there isn't a reason to unless you live in an older home or your child may be exposed to lead someone.

It depends on what it is for. The iron test is a finger prick, but some pedi's will draw blood for a lead test. But, not everyone does the lead test. I think it depends on your state. Our state requires it at one year, and it's a blood draw. It was really hard for me and DD. She cried more for that than she ever did for vaccines.
At our one year, they tested for lead and the other thing (having brain fart sorry). They pricked DD's finger, but proceeded to squeeze blood out of it to get enough to test. It was awful!
Lead test - blood draw. It was wretched. DS started screaming the second I sat down in the chair, and continued the whole time. The tech couldn't get a vein. misery. The only plus was that we were able to get the RAST allergy test done at the same time - I wouldn't have gone through that again.
We had the iron test and requested and had done a lead test. They did a finger prick/slit and squeezed her finger to fill both applicators. She didn't even cry - at all. I was amazed that she didn't fuss. It took a couple min to get enough blood for the straw like thing the blood went into for the lead test.
Re: one year pedi check-up
if it's the iron test then they only pricked Emmie's finger.
Our pediatrician did it at the 9month and it was just a prick on the toe. No fuss and simple.
This exactly. My LO didn't even flich. It was over too quickly for her to even realize what was going on.
