So I was reading a post below where one girl was a carrier of something. When do doctors usually test for that? Or do you have to request it?
I am only at 6 weeks, but when is the usual time that the doctor will order the test for that stuff? This is my second time being pregnant (last one ended in miscarriage and D&C at 10 weeks) I had blood done last time and this time around the same time (5/6 weeks) and my doctor never said anything (other than my thyroid issue) So did he not test for the gentic things?
I am deff going to ask on my next appt but I also don't want to seem like a freak asking about things that is either too early or that I am supposed to request myself.
Re: Blood Tests...
I believe the screen for cystic fibrosis is mandatory because it is so important to know ahead of time if there is a risk (so baby gets treatment from day 1). Yet it's rather rare, and both mom and the dad have to be carriers for there even to be a risk.
anyway, long story short it's just part of the blood work up....along with iron, glucose, etc. I haven't had my 1st appt. yet, but with my DD I swear they took like 4 or 5 vials of blood at that first visit!
I was told by my OB that the test for CF carriers is optional and not always covered by insurance. We don't have any family history of it and since they told me it was a $400 test, I opted out. They told me they test every baby for it at birth, so if there are any issues they will come out then.
Get used to having your blood drawn, because they do it throughout pregnancy to test for and rule out a TON of health conditions, both in you and baby. I think in 16 weeks I have had at least a dozen vials of blood collected. :-)

Oh I am deff used to it. With my thyroid, I get my blood drawn like every other appt. I was just wondering if I have to ask my doc, or if it was just like a normal thing they do. Thanks
