For those whose LOs have a pacifier

How often do they use/want theirs?  Just for sleep?

My son seems to be addicted lately.  He wants it all the time or is fussy.  I try to limit it but he gets so unhappy and I have been breaking doiwn.  And my Gma who watches him 2x  week seems to let him have it 24x7.

I kno wthe time will come to take it away but how tough am I making it on myself?  My daughter never used one ever.

Re: For those whose LOs have a pacifier

  • DS gets his paci at nap time and bed time only. I don't have any plans to wean him anytime soon, as it doesn't seem to be an issue.

  • My DD gets hers for naps and bedtime, but sometimes when she's extra fussy I'll let her have it too, oh and also on when she's cranky in the car. I'm not too worried but I plan to take it away by when she's 2yrs.

  • DS gets his at nap time and bed time, but when he's been sick or teething, seems to want it nonstop.  I just try to limit it as much as I can.  As long as its only sleeping, I'm okay with it awhile longer!

  • Evie gets hers during the day and for naps, but she does not have it at bedtime.

  • HIDE EM'!! From grandma and she won't have any to give him 24/7!!

DD only gets hers for nap and bed and readily takes it out and puts it back in her crib when we take her out. He's fussing because g'ma gives it to him anytime he fusses and he thinks you will do the same.  It is simple learned behavior.

  • My LO is 16 mo an our sitter has done a terrific job at limiting during the day. And, actually, it wasn't at my request. I don't think she really likes them and I could see her not having used them for her kids. And, I wasn't going to complain. This week I  took it away from DD. We make her throw it into her crib after we change her diaper in the mornings and after naptimes. She can only have it during those times a day. The first two days she cried a bit realizing she wasn't getting it back. And on the third day she refused to throw it. So, I counted to 3 and popped it out of her mouth praising her for being a big girl.

The past two days have been great! And yesterday was the first time she didn't use it in the car. She cried a lot more than she would if she had it. But, I am not going to give in. We made such great progress this week even with getting rid of the bottle, I can't go back.

If you give it a few days you'll see your LO forgetting about it and have more confidence in getting rid of it. I def feel like I'm doing it at the right time and that it's working. If she put up a bigger fight, I'd probably be giving in.

  • DD gets hers when she naps and at bedtime (I pull it out once she's asleep if it's still in there) and on occasion if we're in public and she's being cranky cause she's tired or teething. I think the Gma thing is messing with your system.
  • I've never given them pacis outside of sleeping, carseat & stroller so they never ask for/want it otherwise. I'm going to get rid of it on the stroller soon, then the carseat & then the sleeping maybe around 2 or so.
  • Only for sleep, and it's getting taken away as soon as these last two teeth are finished coming through. I suspect it'll be a major PITA for a few days, and then hopefully he won't care because he'll realize it's not coming back.

  • Olivia is addicted to her paci. She used to had them only for naps or when she was tired. But lately, she wants it all the time. I try to take it away when she is not fussy.
  • We give it to him before nap and at bedtime. Honestly, I'm not even sure if he needs it, we just always give it to him out of habit. He's never been fussy for it, I've just always thought it may help him sleep better. For all I know, he spits it out the minute I leave the room...LOL.
  • He uses his off and on all day.  He sleeps with it and we find it most useful in the car, it helps him relax.  Whenever he sees it, he'll pick it up and put it in his mouth.  We don't really offer it to him unless he "needs" it but we don't restrict it yet either.

  • DD is pretty addicted.  She uses it for sleep and has to have it in the car-she screams bloody murder if she doesn't have it within a few moments of being strapped into the carseat.  However, with it she's a happy camper.  She also gets it when she is wanting cuddle time/is tired or when she gets hurt.  It's sort of like a fix-all in our house.  I know we need to get rid of it, but I just don't see that as the priority right now.

  • Only 1 ds still uses a pacifier.  He uses it for naps and bedtime and it stays in his crib (he pops it out and throws it when he leaves there)- of course it is replaced with a clean one:)  I plan on weaning him completely off at 2.

  • When sleeping or when he is on a long car ride. Sometimes if he isn't feeling well or if he is really tired he will want it.

This is us too.  I let him have it more lately to get him through his molars.

  • DS uses his pacifier at naptime/bedtime only?sometimes in the car, too.  I never offer it, but if he wants one he knows where to find it. He's cutting 6 teeth right now (bottom molars and all 4 canines) and he seems a bit more attached to it.

I'm not planning to wean him just yet as we only moved into a new home this week and there is still a lot of stuff going on (boxes, babysitters) and it helps him sleep.  As I was a thumb sucker until I was 10 or 11 (seriously!) I have no issues with a paci.  Most children I know who used it were done by age 3 (or earlier).
