Food (storage issues vs. sales/money)

I am wondering what those of you who don't have a lot of room for storage space do as far as food...do you stock up when things are on sale and deal with it being "in the way" or tucked randomly everywhere or do you just buy as you need it.

Our new place has a bigger kitchen, but the way it is laid out (someday I should take a pic, it is funky) does not leave room to add a pantry or shelves or anything functional for food storage.  I have managed to get rid of and re-arrange enough to steal a little cabinet space, but not enough for stocking up on things liked cans of tomatoes/paste, rice, etc etc etc.  So when I get excited (like last week) at the great sales on stuff we use, I end up with it sitting on the table or cabinet.  I have already stolen 2 shelves from our adjoined living room (and covered them with fabric), but there just isn't much room for big boxes and extra cans.  I hate to pay more for items, but I hate the visual clutter/inconvience of having it lay around.   And we end up trying to buy storage that will work which costs money too.

Just wondered what other people in storage short spaces do...forgo the sales or stash it around. :)

Oh, I should add we do not have closets or any space elsewhere in the house to make a pantry type area.

Re: Food (storage issues vs. sales/money)

  • I have a small cabinet in my dining room and extra shelving in my laundry room.  I make an effort to plan my meals around my stash.  I try not to overdo it.  If I can get things for free or next to free with sales and coupons, I do because even if I don't end up using them I can always donate them.  If I don't have a coupon, I buy what I need since most of the sales come back around every few months or so.

  • I don't have much space at all as we live in a little box of a house right now, but luckily we have a detached garage for me to store canned goods and such. I make sure to check out there every few weeks before I meal plan and shop. I am pretty low on my staples right now so I am hoping for some good sales/coupons this week!

  • Right now we live in an apartment while we wait to buy a house.  We have VERY limited storage space.  I even have most of my kitchen items from our old house in storage so I have more room for food.  I pretty much just buy as I go except for cereal which just sits above the cabinets looking tacky.  If I was in this situation long term, I would get ceative with storage (under beds, etc).  For now I just buy as I needs with a few exceptions.

  • Have you thought about putting something like this (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sauder-Pantry-Carolina-Oak/9606721) in your dining area?

  • I stash the stuff we buy for sales around. Sometimes it almost seems we have stuff falling out of our cabinets. The stuff we use often goes so quickly that it is usually only a week of having overstuffed cabinets. My DH eats a lot of the same things over and over so I try to stock up on that stuff the most.
