Some Qs on Baby Gear re: #2

1) Breast Pumps - is my pump from 2009 still good? It was used by me (not necessarily daily but several times a week) for about 9 months and my best friend then used it for about 6-7 months, probably close to daily after the first month or so as she pumped more than nursed. And yes, it's a closed system and we each used our own sets of tubes/parts/etc. I just wonder if the motor might be a bit old.

2) Pack and Play - we were in a one story and one kid when we had Toodle. Now in a 2 story and less likely to want to go up and down with 2. Assume we should have a pack and play on each level (will have baby sleep in it in our room for first 6 months or so I assume which is why we'd need it upstairs and not just the crib). Of course, that assumes a baby that can be put down for naps which didn't happen until about 9 months with Toodle. Thoughts?

3) Double strollers - what are the faves these days? Was considering a jogger but wouldn't be able to actually jog until spring/summer 2012 as jogging w/ a newborn is a no go and we can't jog outside once October/November hits. I love the Baby Jogger new one but not sure if I can justify it (although we may sell our Bugaboo).

Re: Some Qs on Baby Gear re: #2

  • My breast pump was used by me for 3 months with Maya, then my friend for 9 months, and then me for a whole year. I have a Medela PISA and it has held up great!

As far as PNPs go, my guess is that you will want at least 2. We only had one but we just used her crib upstairs for napping and the PNP downstairs.

I have 2 double strollers. I have a Baby Trend Sit N Stand Double (my everyday mall stroller) and my Baby Jogger City Series (I have the classic that is now discontinued). One is a tandem and one is side by side. I like them both for different reasons.

  • 1 - I think you should use the breast pump as long as you can to see how much life it has left.  Unfortunately, you wont know if you need a new one until it breaks.

2 - We are using a Rock N Play for the baby in our room.  It is apparently amazing and everyone raves about it plus it is much more compact (and less expensive) than a pack n play.  Check out the reviews online.

3 - We have the baby jogger city select.  I've been using it as a single for a few months and so far I like it a lot.  I put it together as a double the other day to make sure I knew how/everything fit/etc. and the only issue I had was that the canopy on the bottom has to be on the lower setting and I currently have it on the higher one.  That was with my Graco SafeSeat, I'm sure different seats will fit a little differently so if you can, try it in the store.  We tried a bunch in the store because I didnt want to get this one just because it was the popular one but it beat the others by far.  Graco and Chicco were huge.  DS refused to sit in the jump seat on the back of the Britax B-Ready and other similar ones like Phil & Ted plus, that leaves no basket space.  I didnt think DS was ready for a sit n stand.  So that left the BJ CS.  Also, I saw it was on sale at a bunch of places recently (buy buy baby and diapers.com I think) so you might want to look into that if you're interested.

  • 1) It should still be fine.  I got mine from my friend and used it with both of babies and am hoping it makes it through this new baby too.

    2) We actually borrowed one for a couple of months.  We had one in our room for sleeping at night and one in the basement.  We knew it would only be the case for a couple of months so didn't want to buy a second one...it did come in handy having 2 set up especially after my csection

    3) We have the Baby Trend Sit N Stand which has worked out good for us.  My oldest started to hate being straped into a stroller so having the option to stand works well for us.  If we had a typical dounble stroller I know we would be fighting her to get in it.  We really do use the single umbrella stroller a lot too...and our oldest walks...this is when we are going on quicker trips not like walking the zoo all day...

  • 1) Never breastfed, so can't help you with this one!

    2) I 2nd the Fisher Price Rock N Play Sleeper. By far, the best baby product out there right now. It folds up super easily (you can fold it and store it under a bed!), you can travel with it and its inexpensive. I would buy this for the baby to sleep in at night (or for upstairs). DS2 slept in it for 7 months. Not only do I love it, but it is on an incline, which is really great because then you don't have to worry about a newborn sleeping flat :)

    3) We got the Baby Jogger City Mini and I LOVE it. It folds super easily and is one of the lightest double strollers on the market. Also, it fits through standard doors even though it is a side-by-side. The only downfall is that the basket underneath isn't that great, but there are mesh pockets on the back of each seat, so you can store stuff there. Also, everything is "a la carte" for this stroller, so you have to buy the belly bar, cup holder, etc. It was worth every penny! It drives very smoothly as well :)

  • 1) I really have no idea. Honestly, I doubt very much that I'll pump for this one. I just have a feeling I'll be much more laid back about giving a bottle of formula here or there when I need to. Finding the time to pump with Henry was tough...I can't imagine doing it with two in the house. My PISA may be permanently retired.

    2) We're also doing the Fisher-Price Rock n Play Sleeper, but I still see the benefit to having two PNPs. We still use ours a ton to contain Henry when we need to go upstairs/outside/etc. We bought a PNP for my MIL's house and I may just borrow it for the first few weeks to see how much we really use it before we go out and buy another.

    3) I'm waiting until after the baby arrives to make a decision about the double stroller situation...but I'm leaning toward the BJ City Select. Also thinking about selling our Bugaboo.

  • you can still use your pump

  • 1.  I would try it!  They are expensive, only get a new one if you need to.

    2.  We had a similar situation to you - with one kid, one story, 2 kids, 2 stories.  For DS we had a co-sleeper in our room and his crib.  We had a pack and play, but just left it at DH's parents house for when we would visit them.  When DD came along she used DS's co-sleeper and her bouncy seat to nap.  But, I did find that I needed a pack and play eventually.  When I started getting DD on a schedule with naps in her crib, I needed a place to keep DS while I did that...so he goes in the pnp with some toys and sesame street on tv (if he came with me, he would distract DD, and I didn't want him roaming around the house while I was busy).  So we eventually bought a new one, and now we have 2 - so they each can have a place to sleep when we travel, as well.

If you already have one, I would start off with just that one, and figure out what your needs are.

    3.  I think this depends on what your stroller needs are.  We live in the city and use our stroller outside multiple times each week - in the snow, rain, over uneven pavement, etc, so we have a double jogger - a Bumbleride Indie twin, which we love (and our experienced nanny says that it is her favorite stroller - she has used the valco double, the bob double, and a bugaboo frog).  But it is big and heavy, so if you are mostly going to be using it for trips to stores, malls, it may not be the stroller for you.

Our neighbors across the street have a Bugaboo Frog and 2 kids 2 years apart.  They have only ever needed the single stroller but with the wheeled board for the toddler to stand on.  That would never have worked for me as my DS needs to be strapped in so he won't be running all over the place (he was 15 months when DD was born), but it might be an option for you.

  • 1. Your pump should be fine! I used mine for the twins for 3 or so months and Brady the same amount of time. My cousin has been using since October!

    2. I would try the RNP on one level and PNP on the other level. Does Toddle ever use the PNP?? If so, maybe I would get an 2nd PNP. I have three myself but when I had Brady the twins were only 12 months. I still use them though, keep 2 at my parents and one here!

     3. I would probably get a double but think about how much you will use it. Where you live would factor in to that for me too. I live outside of NYC (about 45 minutes) and we spend a lot of time in the city. If I had to pick a double over again I would get City Mini

  • Check reviews of the RocknPlay carefully!  I was sold until I saw all the cases of torticollis and plagiocephaly (sorry if spelling is bad...one handed here).  It seems that everyone loves it at first and then notices the problems.  It has a hard surface under the head that seems to be the culprit for these issues.
  • We are getting a new pnp. I got a BOB in late summer a couple months before we got pg. We will be selling and getting a new double, not sure if Baby Jogger or BOB. We have an extra glider that we are just getting a slipcover for
