9 week old sleep question

How much should my 9 week old be sleeping during the day? If he is up for more than 2 hours at a time he gets very fussy and wants to go to sleep. I'm just worried that he is sleeping too much. Is that possible?

Re: 9 week old sleep question

  • I don't think they can sleep too much at that age. I'm pretty sure my guy slept every 3 hours until about 5-6 months old. He would wake around 7, nap at 10 am, at 1, and at 4 (he only slept for 30 minute increments). Most baby books say that at that age they can only be awake a couple hours anyways.

  • At that age Henry was only staying awake an hour and a half at a time. Definitely put him down at the first sign that he's tired...don't worry about him sleeping too much.
  • My girls are almost 5 months and still can't be up for much more then an hour and a half before they are ready to nap.  For us at that age it was an hour or less of awake time.

  • Umm...Anna still isn't awake for much more than 2 hours! lol! But that was my rule of thumb when she was a newborn. After 90 minutes - 2 hours, she would need a nap. I don't think they can sleep too much during the day at that age!

  • In baby 411 it says a baby his age should be getting a minimum of 15'ish hours a day (I took a middle # btwn 1 & 3 mos). I think babies at this age just sleep as much as they need to. As long as he's not up for hours at night b/c of all the sleep during the day, then it's probably perfectly fine. My DD normally sleeps 11-12 hours at night & 3-6 hours of naps during the day.
  • Our sleep book (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child) says to help them back to sleep within two hours of waking (or less, based on your child's sleep signs).  I highly recommend the book!

  • TOTALLY normal and healthy to need sleep after two hours. a baby can't sleep too much, really, especially a newborn.

keep in mind also that it's only around the 6-8 week mark that they start (key word: START) to sleep more at night than during the day. my little man is still pretty nocturnal at four months--he sleeps from midnight to 8 a.m. (waking several times in that period), but is usually wide awake until midnight. you just have to roll with whatever happens during the newborn stage. whatever they do is what's healthy for them, and nine weeks is much too soon IMO to try to force them to adopt any schedule.
