I wanted to introduce myself. I used to be a regular on BOTB in 2007-2009 when I conceived my son Charlie who will now be turning 3 in late April. We had no trouble getting pregnant; second time around is such a different story.
I know many of you ladies have an infertility journey that lasts for years and, wow, I am in awe of you and your perseverance and just your ability to keep your head up during this whole process.
My husband and I started TTC late last spring. We waited a while because my son was a colicky/reflux baby that had multiple sleep and eating issues and honestly it took a long time to get comfortable with the thought of adding to our family.
Well after issues with my cycles shortening (I was charting) my OB prescribed  increasing dosages of clomid. After 3 failed months we were referred to a RE.  All tests came back fairly normal with two items on the low end of normal (my ovarian reserve and my husbands morphology) The doctor was not overly concerned
Our first month we had a timed intercourse with injectables and femara and a trigger shot- BFN.
December we took off (and TTC naturally) because of the holidays. BFN
January we had injectables, femara and two IUIs. I had 5 very mature follicles and one on the cusp and my doctor nearly cancelled my cycle but decided to advise me to go forward.
I thought all month that maybe I had twins to look forward to. What devastation that I didn't even make it to the pregnancy blood test appointment; 5 days early my period arrived.
And now my doctor wants to do IVF. He thinks since we went so aggressive last cycle and nothing worked that we may want to discuss a change in plans.
The physical, emotional and monetary expense (we are paying completely out of pocket) of this is so stressful.
Here's my question if you only had one unsuccessful IUI would you try for another round or just go forward with the IVF?  Thanks so much for reading my novel if you made it this far.
Re: New to TTTC, used to frequent BOTB- a question
Welcome and I'm sorry you have to be here. I don't really have any advice since I am approaching my first IUI but I would guess if I were in your position the amount of savings I had + my age would play a role in my decision.
P.S. Your little one is adorable!

Welcome to the board!
We only did 1 IUI before moving onto IVF. Our RE gave us a very low chance of success with IUI because of our dx (around 3%) so of course this played a huge role in our decision. Originally we had planned on doing 3 IUI's before moving on. We are also OOP for the most part (I have a small amount of prescription coverage) and that also played a role in our decision - I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on something that probably wasn't going to work.
If you like your RE and trust them (which I hope you do, that is so important) I would go with their recommendations.
Good luck!

MrsVo- Oy they charge something like $500 extra for freezing and holding onto the sperm at my clinic. Hope you don't have to worry about that.
Mrs.Loos Thx for the welcome. Yes I love my RE, he's wonderful and very compassionate. The cost of this is killing me. We are in Ct (near NYC) and they are charging 10,000+ for one cycle of IVF.
This is pretty average. It can vary a lot from clinic to clinic but this is what we paid and I'm in Minnesota.
Good luck!
We just finished our first IUI for what we thought was unexplained IF (no issues for either of us on initial testing), but had a few surprises--mainly DH's counts were way lower on the post-wash sample than expected. We are trying one more IUI, but if the counts don't improve, we'll probably go to IVF. It's possible we could still have success with repeated IUI's but I'm 35, I'm going to run out of eggs eventually. I figure I'd rather go to IVF while my eggs are still (relatively) young, rather than try another 6 months of IUI's (and pay the $1000 a pop for those). The way I like to look at it is yes, we'll end up paying the $10,000 for IVF, but we're saving the $6000 on failed IUI's.
Good luck!
