Trouble TTC

Hair Dye and TTC

A good year before we were TTC I started to go au naturel with my hair, but after many months of TTCing with no success I went back to being blonde.  Now we're at the year mark and I still like being blonde :)  However, I know that if I suddenly get PG I am going to have an ugly root line if I don't want to dye my hair for the first part of PG for the baby's safety. (I know this topic is a bit shallow, but, hey, I do want to look good!)

My question is what are your TTC hair dying strategies?

Re: Hair Dye and TTC

  • I didn't say it was my biggest concern...

  • jms - the highlights idea is good, especially since the dye doesn't generally touch the scalp and therefore won't enter the bloodstream.  I will keep that in mind when my lucky day comes!

Geordie - no worries!  I am also having a bit of a down day and was trying to get my mind off ttc stuff by thinking about hair :)  GL to you as well!

  • I'm a hair stylist and i would say go for it.. We have alot of mothers call and ask this questions.. Just try and stay away from on the scalp bleach.. Also people think by going back to their natural hair color, can be safer.. well that is false, Darker hair color has even stronger chemicals in it then any other color.. Stick to foils and you will be just fine..Also try and see a stylist that uses all natural chemicals.
  • My hair was much blonder than my natural color when we started TTC over a year and a half ago.  I have gone gradually darker and am now at roughly my natural medium color.  Even though my gray shows more easily, I'm glad I did it.  I don't miss the chemicals and cost to upkeep.

  • After having my ET, I was given a FAQ sheet. It actually said that I could color my hair as normal ( and the guidlines are usually stricter for those with IF to prevent early miscarraiges).

  • It's not going to hurt anything to get your hair highlighted. Just try not to breathe in a lot of fumes if you do get pregnant. Some of the stuff like that that people tell you not to do when you're pg are just old wives tales and don't really make much difference. I wouldn't sweat it.

I don't take one single minute for granted.
  • I also suggest highlights. Easier to maintain anyway in my opinion. There are also all natural dyes that can be used, a little bit more pricey but it might be worth the peace of mind.

  • Believe it or not, I have actually fixated on this particular subject and these posts made me feel so much better!  Obviously, I would do anything for a healthy BFP, but I do love being a redhead and would like to stay that way!  I am a natural red, but as I have gotten older, it has gotten mousier and I really don't like it...
