Don't laugh when I refer this to training a dog. When it comes to praising, do you have a jar of "treats" in the bathroom at all times or do you give them the special treat in the kitchen? I know when it comes to PT a dog, you give the treat outside right when the dog pees/poop. So my question is, do you keep a stash of special treats in the bathroom?
Jalen is showing more and more into PT. Since October it has been hit and miss, but recently he more into the whole thing. Right now I can not do the whole 3 day thing. Any advice since this will be a day to day process. A few months ago, I was more like egh about the whole thing because I thought 17 months was way to early for the whole thing. TIA!
Re: Silly PT question
It grossed me out to think of leaving the treats IN the bathroom so I just grabbed a tube of mini m&ms on the way to the bathroom. He got them after he went and washed his hands.
And sometimes seeing them in the kitchen or where ever would remind him he had to go (or maybe he just wanted a treat so he went? Either way....)
Ha! I totally think potty training toddlers is very similar to potty training a dog.
At first I didn't want to do positive reinforcement with a tangible "treat" and wanted to try using encouraging words. Well I flushed that idea down the toilet (no pun intended) and we are using mini M&Ms too. She is much more motivated to go when she knows she gets one mini M&M afterward. We keep them in the kitchen and run in there after she goes. She is so excited!
I think PTing can go in waves. 5 months ago she was really really interested and went a lot. After doing that for about 3 weeks she was over it. Now she's starting to show interest again, and I'm going to try to take advantage of it this time.
Good luck!
I've always thought that if you give a dog a treat for being praised, it should happen where the activity took place to avoid confusion. Have you thought about keeping the treats by the door so you can grab one on the way out, and after they do their business give them a treat right away? That has worked very well for our dogs.
