gallbladder issues

Anyone have this after giving birth?

They found some gallstones last year during an abdominal u/s and I just had another one the other day, where they found a 1.2cm one that's not blocking the duct.  My dr said we can just leave it untreated or go talk to a surgeon and have it taken out.  If we leave it untreated, we just watch it and I try to watch my diet and if I have an attack, I go to the hospital but if it's blocking the duct, they will have to do emergency gallbladder surgery.

Re: gallbladder issues

  • I have not been officially dx, but I am fairly certain that I've been having gall bladder attacks since Libby was about 2 weeks old. I think I have more sludge than actual stones, but have plans to have a scan to check for sure. I have done a gall bladder cleanse once in September and that seemed to help. But I've had two attacks since then....one on Halloween and one on Christmas Eve. Taking GasX helps and so does apple cider vineagar with walnut oil. Mine only last about 15 minutes and I am never vomitting, etc. which is why I feel it's probably sludge versus actual stones. The pain is excruciating though...

I wish to avoid surgery, especially removing the organ itself, so I am working on diet modification and "natural" approaches to helping this situation:

I want to look into taking bile salts to help the situation, in addition to doing the cleanse and diet modifications.

  • I had gallbladder attacks after my 2nd. They started when she was 2 months. I really had no idea what was happening. It would happen like twice a week and they would last over an hour. I would vomit violently with nothing really coming up(sorry for the TMI). And I really cannot describe the pain. It is something I NEVER want to feel again in my life. I would rather have 20 children all at once than ever feel that pain again. ANd thankfully I don't!!! When she was just about 3 months(2 days before Christmas of all times) I really felt like I was going to die the pain was that bad. Called EMS, went to the hospital and didn't really get a choice about surgery. But can I tell you it was the BEST thing ever!. For me anyway. I have not had one stitch of pain in the area since. The doc said that for some women Gallstones are just brought about with pregnancy. I would def keep an eye on the situation because that pain is unbearable and I wouldn't want anyone to have to experience it.

I have to agree with all of this! I would rather have another c-section before dealing with that sort of pain. I started having issues a few months after having Cassie in 08, and finally on NYE 2009, the pain hit me. I was dumb though and waited it out thinking it would go away. After a few days of unbearable pain, I finally asked DH to take me to the ER. I was diagnosed with pancreatitis and was admitted to the hospital. I was there for 3 days (with no food!) before having surgery to remove my gallbladder.

Just like HH mentioned, definitely keep an eye on it, monitor your symptoms and don't let it get out of hand. Sometimes changing your diet can help too, but unfortunately that didn't work for me.

Sorry you're dealing with this :(

mine only happened once, but I described the pain as what I felt during giving birth.  It was unbelievable.  No position was remotely comfortable.  And EMS took me to the hospital, but the pain subsided (they wouldn't give me pain meds b/c they said it can mask a problem).  They let me go home after I kept down some gatorade.  But I don't want to experience that pain again ever either.

ETA: they didn't do any scans when I was in there, but the u/s that I had the other day showed that it wasn't blocking the duct.  I wonder if I passed one that was blocking it.  I have the option of talking to a surgeon about having it removed, but I'm undecided about it.

  • I had awful gallbladder problems about 6 yrs ago and it took 3 drs and almost a year to be proberly diagniosed and those were some awful months.  In the end I only had a spastic gallbladder that only functions at 38% (it had to be at 33% for them to take it out) and I was beggin for the surgery just to get relief.  But after the right meds and some time it has gotten better but I was afraid that being pregnant was going to make it start up again but so far so good
