Anti-depressant/anxiety meds- question about BFing/side effects

My doctor wrote me a prescription for Prozac because I've been struggling with extreme anxiety. I told her I was still nursing just a little bit in the morning and at night... I checked the prescription the other day and the bottle says not to take it if you are breastfeeding, but I looked up the side effects that it can have on LO and they didn't seem too concerning. DS has been a little more irritable lately, but I'm not sure if it would be my meds getting into my milk or if it's just teething. I'm also not even sure he's getting much milk from me anymore.

Has anyone else experienced their LO having side effects from your anti-depressant/anxiety meds? Did you switch medications?

Re: Anti-depressant/anxiety meds- question about BFing/side effects

  • You and your Dr are the only ones who can make this decision.  I can tell you this - I was on Zoloft.  One of the most commonly taken meds while BFing.  On my script it said DO NOT TAKE IF BFing.  I just looked it up online, and Zoloft and Prozac seemed to be in the same class.  If it were me personally, if my Dr didn't think it were a problem, I would take it.  That is just ME though.  This is a decision that YOU need to make for YOU and your LO.  Maybe put a call in to your LO's pedi?  See what they have to say.  Another opinion couldn't hurt.  HTH.  Good luck!

  • I agree with everything the pp said. I have been on zoloft since week 6. My ob/gyn, therapist and the pedi helped me to make the decision. GL!

  • I always put this number on here and wish Id found it before I stopped BFing after being given incorrect information but its a hotline in Canada that is free to call but long distance charges may apply. They specialize in answering questions about BFing and meds. Its actually called Breatfeeding Mothers and Meds I believes. Someone will answer the phone and give you VERY informative info

But from personal knowledge besides Zoloft, Prozac is the 2nd safest med to take while BFing. But hopefully you can call and they can help you. *HUGS*
